From Guangzhou to Southampton, cargo moves from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha, crosses a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and is discharged at a port that counts the 24-hour notice from the Nab or Needles, not the berth.
British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.
Written notice to the Harbour Master 24 hours before the ship reaches the Nab or Needles, listing each substance by name, UN number, quantity and packages.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Southampton and the United Kingdom market.
On 22 September 2026 Dongguan and Guangzhou MSA agreed to extend the one-box model to Nansha: Guangzhou MSA recognises Dongguan MSA's factory inspection and does not re-inspect unless necessary. The first box was stuffed in Dongguan that day and sailed from Nansha to Singapore on 24 September. The model is new at Nansha, so the factory record has to be right first time.
What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your Dongguan factory can use the Nansha one-box arrangement and make sure the stuffing photos, packing certificate and DG declaration match, because a mismatch is the 'necessary' case that brings the second inspection back.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Southampton decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
Southampton's Harbour Master needs written notice of dangerous substances at least 24 hours before the ship reaches the Nab or Needles, the entrance to the Solent, not the berth. The notice lists technical name, UN number, quantity, class and packages for each substance, and on short final legs it comes from the last port of call.
What Anxin does: We give the carrier the exact technical name, UN number and package count for the batteries at booking, so the Solent notice does not need correcting at sea.
Once the box is off the quay at Southampton, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Southampton matches what left Guangzhou.
Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.
What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Guangzhou cut-off.
The UK usually treats the importer as the producer. Producers of industrial and vehicle batteries register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, report tonnage, chemistry and brand by 31 March, and take waste industrial batteries back from end-users free of charge; the BPRN must appear on invoices and delivery notes to business customers.
What Anxin does: For storage and industrial packs we ask the UK importer for its BPRN before booking and add it to the documents we prepare.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Guangzhou filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Southampton.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second inspection at Nansha because factory records are incomplete | Dongguan factory → Nansha | Photos, packing certificate and declaration matched before trucking | Anxin |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Notice incomplete when the ship approaches the Solent | Port of Southampton | Complete DG data at booking | Carrier / agent |
| Entry summary not lodged and the box rolls | Loading port, Guangzhou | Filer and data settled at booking | Bill-of-lading issuer |
Questions
At least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is responsible, and a booking made within 24 hours of loading goes on a later vessel.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Both now have a one-box arrangement with Dongguan MSA: Yantian since May 2026 and Nansha since 22 September 2026, so a container inspected at the factory need not be reopened at the terminal unless necessary. The choice then comes down to the carrier's service to your destination and the cut-offs; we compare both when you book.
