Lithium batteries for Savona go out of Lianyungang, where the MSA simplified 'new three' filings in 2024. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at the port of Savona.

The Italian side adds the registropile.it registration to the EU battery rules. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Italian-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

What sets Lianyungang → Savona apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Lianyungang and Savona: 5 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Savona and at customs in Italy.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Sea corridor

The canal is open; the risk sits further south

The JMIC's September 2026 update put the northern Red Sea and the Suez Canal at MODERATE, with two-way transits and container lines selectively returning, and the Eastern Mediterranean at LOW. On this corridor the exposure lies at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, not at the canal itself.

What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.

  3. Import country

The truck leg out of Savona runs under ADR

Road delivery from Savona is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Italy haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Lianyungang.

  4. Import country

Safety information in a language Italy accepts

An importer has to ensure that batteries are accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in Italy can easily understand, as the Member State determines. Inserts and carton print are much simpler to adjust before packing in China.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Italy requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

  5. Import country

Due diligence on battery raw materials from August 2027

Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 pushed the Battery Regulation's due diligence duties for cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite back to 18 August 2027 and gave the Commission until 26 July 2026 for its guidelines. Buyers in Italy are already collecting the supply-chain information they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Italy buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Lianyungang → Savona

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Lianyungang end

  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Register number to appear on the commercial invoice
  • EU declaration of conformity and CE marking photo from the manufacturer
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Italy before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Savona.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Savona

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Savona. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
