Lithium batteries for Barcelona go through Lianyungang port. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at a port whose dangerous goods authorisations expire and must be renewed by the consignee.

Spain wants the producer on the RII-PYA register, with its number on the invoice. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Lianyungang export
  • Spanish-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

The Lianyungang → Barcelona route in brief

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Import country

Spain

RII-PYA registration with its number on every invoice, quarterly market data including batteries inside equipment, and the EU-wide CE and label duties.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Lianyungang and Barcelona: 6 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Barcelona and the Spain market.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Sea corridor

The canal is open; the risk sits further south

The JMIC's September 2026 update put the northern Red Sea and the Suez Canal at MODERATE, with two-way transits and container lines selectively returning, and the Eastern Mediterranean at LOW. On this corridor the exposure lies at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, not at the canal itself.

What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.

  3. Destination port

A pickup authorisation from the Port Authority and Capitanía

To collect a dangerous-goods container in Barcelona, the consignee's agent needs a valid authorisation issued by the Port Authority together with the Capitanía Marítima, requested from the port's dangerous goods department. It states its validity and safety conditions, and an expired one has to be replaced before the truck can collect.

What Anxin does: We ask the Barcelona importer to have its agent request the authorisation before the ship arrives, and send the agent the DG declaration and packing list as soon as the vessel sails from Lianyungang.

  4. Import country

The truck leg out of Barcelona runs under ADR

Road delivery from Barcelona is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Spain haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Lianyungang.

  5. Import country

Safety documentation for stationary storage systems

Since 18 August 2024 a stationary battery energy storage system placed on the EU market must be safe in normal operation, and its technical documentation must show testing against the Annex V safety parameters, from thermal shock and short-circuit protection to over-discharge and thermal propagation. Buyers of ESS cabinets in Spain increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Spain we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

  6. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead limits in portable batteries

Annex I of the Battery Regulation caps mercury at 0.0005 %, cadmium at 0.002 % and lead at 0.01 % by weight in portable batteries, and the lead limit has applied since 18 August 2024. Market surveillance in Spain can ask the importer to show that the goods meet these limits.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Spain importer; we do not test batteries.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Spain before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Barcelona.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Lianyungang to Barcelona

Yes. Batteries incorporated in electrical and electronic equipment, removable or not, are registered and declared like loose batteries.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Under its Notice No. 1 of 2024, the cargo side submits the DG safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney.
