Lithium batteries for Mersin go from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at Mersin, where a battery box declared late as dangerous goods is penalised.
Türkiye checks battery imports through TAREKS before the customs declaration is registered. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.
CE evidence, a TAREKS check and a clean invoice with HS codes are what Turkish customs looks for on batteries.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Lianyungang to import into Turkey, each with what we do about it.
Lianyungang MSA's Notice No. 1 of 2024 cut the materials for 'new three' cargo to four on the cargo side: the safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where packaged, and a power of attorney. Fewer papers means each one carries more weight; the packing certificate still has to be signed by a certified inspector after supervised stuffing.
What Anxin does: We prepare the four cargo-side documents together and check that the packing certificate, the packaging certificate and the declaration describe the same UN numbers and quantities.
Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Mersin most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Mersin uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.
At Mersin, the discharge list has to carry the IMO class of every DG container; a mismatch with the box, or a container declared dangerous only after it has been landed, draws a per-container label penalty.
What Anxin does: We book lithium batteries as class 9 from the start and check the placards in the sealed-container photos, so the discharge list for Mersin and the box agree.
A battery container landed at Mersin cannot be declared to customs until the TAREKS import inspection under Communiqué 2017/15 is done; the system selects checks by risk analysis, and the importer answers for compliance.
What Anxin does: We send the importer the manufacturer's declaration of conformity, test reports and product photos before loading, for its TAREKS application.
Turkish rules forbid distributors from selling battery brands that are not covered by a collection system, and require them to take back waste batteries free of charge. A brand shipped to Mersin before its importer has joined the system can end up unsellable in Turkish retail.
What Anxin does: We ask the importer to confirm the brand is registered in its collection system before the first shipment leaves Lianyungang.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Lianyungang filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Turkey before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Mersin.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| One of the four documents inconsistent with the others | Lianyungang MSA filing | Cross-check before submission | Anxin with the declarant |
| Security incident near Bab el-Mandeb changes the routing or adds surcharges | Southern Red Sea | Routing and surcharges stated in writing before booking | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
| IMO label penalty for a list mismatch | Mersin International Port | Class 9 booked and placarded from origin | Carrier / shipper |
| TAREKS inspection delays the customs declaration | Port of discharge | Conformity documents sent before loading | Importer / manufacturer |
Questions
At least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port in China, filed electronically to the customs office of discharge.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Under its Notice No. 1 of 2024, the cargo side submits the DG safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney.
