This route runs from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is the port of Bristol.

The UK side asks for an S&S GB declaration, a battery producer registration and harbour notice. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Break-bulk ESS guide
  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • S&S GB entry summary
  • English-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI

Route profile

How Lianyungang → Bristol differs from other lanes

Origin port

Lianyungang

Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.

Import country

United Kingdom

An EORI starting with GB or XI and a CDS subscription for customs, annual tonnage and chemistry reporting through the NPWD, and take-back duties for distributors above 32 kg a year.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Lianyungang to Bristol

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Bristol and the United Kingdom market.

  1. Origin port

    Fog season at Lianyungang

Between April and July sea fog is a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, the China Meteorological Administration says. Lianyungang, like Qingdao, can see vessels held at anchor by fog, and moving a box to another vessel means amending its DG filings.

What Anxin does: In fog season we keep slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and have the filing data ready to amend.

  2. Origin port

Four cargo-side documents at Lianyungang, each checked

Under Lianyungang MSA's Notice No. 1 of 2024 the cargo side of a 'new three' filing needs four items: safe-carriage declaration, packing certificate signed by an inspector, packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney. A shorter list puts more weight on each paper, and the packing certificate still requires a certified inspector after supervised stuffing.

What Anxin does: We prepare the four cargo-side documents together and check that the packing certificate, the packaging certificate and the declaration describe the same UN numbers and quantities.

  3. Sea corridor

    Container losses off South Africa

Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  4. Import country

Industrial battery producers register within 28 days and put the BPRN on paperwork

In the UK the importer is usually the battery producer. Industrial and vehicle battery producers register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, report tonnage, chemistry and brand by 31 March, and must take waste industrial batteries back from end-users free of charge. Their BPRN goes on invoices and delivery notes to business customers.

What Anxin does: For storage and industrial packs we ask the UK importer for its BPRN before booking and add it to the documents we prepare.

  5. Import country

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading in Lianyungang

Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.

What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Lianyungang cut-off.

  6. Import country

Harbour master notice a day ahead under DGHAR

Under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, dangerous goods may not enter a British harbour area unless the harbour master has had notice at least 24 hours (and at most six months) in advance, or has agreed a shorter period. UN numbers, names and quantities are part of that notice, so the vessel's report is only as good as the booking data.

What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Lianyungang → Bristol

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Lianyungang end

  • The four cargo-side documents under Lianyungang MSA Notice 2024 No. 1 prepared together and cross-checked
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)
  • Bill-of-lading issuer named and S&S GB data complete before loading

At the United Kingdom end

  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries
  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Lianyungang export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Lianyungang → Bristol: questions we are asked

HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or agent needs a GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription; HMRC grants access within 2 hours or up to 5 working days.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Under its Notice No. 1 of 2024, the cargo side submits the DG safe-carriage declaration, the inspector-signed packing certificate, the packaging inspection certificate where the goods are packaged, and a power of attorney.
