Lithium batteries for Teesport go from northern Jiangsu through Lianyungang on the Yellow Sea. On the way they face a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and they arrive at the port of Teesport.
On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Jiangsu's Yellow Sea port, with a simplified document list for 'new three' cargo since 2024 and its own guide for energy-storage units on break-bulk ships.
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Teesport and the United Kingdom market.
Lianyungang MSA's June 2025 guide for ESS on break-bulk ships treats ESS cabinets as UN3480 and ESS containers as UN3536, recommends a remaining charge of 20–50%, and requires converters and monitoring to be powered off, series and parallel circuits disconnected, packages evenly spread with a low centre of gravity, and a safety meeting before the ship arrives.
What Anxin does: For ESS units we confirm the UN number the unit ships under, get the state of charge and isolation steps in writing from the manufacturer, and join the pre-arrival safety meeting with the stowage details.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Teesport decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
Once the box is off the quay at Teesport, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Teesport matches what left Lianyungang.
Every import into the UK is declared in HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or its agent needs an EORI number starting with GB (XI in Northern Ireland) and a CDS subscription, which HMRC grants within 2 hours or up to 5 working days if it runs more checks, so a first-time importer should subscribe well before the ship reaches Teesport.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.
Batteries sold in the UK may contain no more than 0.0005 % mercury and 0.002 % cadmium by weight, subject to listed exceptions, and those above 0.004 % lead need the Pb symbol beneath the bin symbol. The Office for Product Safety and Standards enforces the rules.
What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for a substance statement covering mercury, cadmium and lead and file it with the shipment documents for the UK importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Lianyungang export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESS unit not isolated or poorly distributed in a break-bulk hold | Lianyungang, break-bulk loading | Manufacturer's written isolation steps; safety meeting | Manufacturer / ship, coordinated by Anxin |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Importer not yet subscribed to CDS when the ship arrives | Customs at Teesport | EORI and CDS status confirmed at booking | Importer / customs agent |
Questions
HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or agent needs a GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription; HMRC grants access within 2 hours or up to 5 working days.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Its June 2025 break-bulk ESS guide recommends 20–50% remaining charge, with converters and monitoring off and circuits disconnected.
