Asia – Mediterranean via Suez
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

From Ningbo to Piraeus, cargo moves from Zhejiang's battery and energy-storage makers via Ningbo-Zhoushan, crosses a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and is discharged at a port where the terminal system decides segregation and stacking for each class 9 box.
Greece registers battery producers in EOAN's EMPA register. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.
Dangerous goods notified to the terminal 24 hours before arrival with an IMDG multimodal form, then segregated and stacked by the terminal system.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Ningbo terminal through the voyage to Piraeus and the Greece import file.
Since Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide, a Ningbo shipper no longer attaches the UN38.3 test summary at the MSA cargo-report stage (the carrier receives it instead) and does not resubmit the safety data sheet for an unchanged maker, owner and model. Carriers must still review the documents and turn away batteries that fail the ship-carriage standard JT/T 1543-2025.
What Anxin does: We send the UN38.3 summary and SDS to the carrier with the booking request, and keep a per-model file so repeat shipments use the SDS already on record.
The JMIC's September 2026 update put the northern Red Sea and the Suez Canal at MODERATE, with two-way transits and container lines selectively returning, and the Eastern Mediterranean at LOW. On this corridor the exposure lies at the southern entrance of the Red Sea, not at the canal itself.
What Anxin does: We check before each booking whether the service has changed routing since the last quote.
After checking the file, PCT loads the dangerous goods records into its CATOS system, which decides safety checks, segregation and where a unit may be stacked. A box whose data change after arrival has to go through that process again, which matters most for containers transhipped at Piraeus.
What Anxin does: We avoid changing DG data after departure; if a correction is needed, it goes to the carrier before the vessel reaches Piraeus.
Greece keeps battery producers in EOAN's National Producers Register (EMPA), and registration comes before the first sale. A producer without a Greek establishment appoints a local authorised representative by signed mandate, using the template in the EMPA manual, and then contracts with an approved collective system.
What Anxin does: We ask the Greek consignee who is registered as producer in EMPA before booking.
Article 11 of the Battery Regulation says that from 18 February 2027 portable batteries inside appliances must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user using commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, except under limited derogations. Appliances sold in Greece after that date need a design that complies.
What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Greece we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Ningbo filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Greece before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Piraeus.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier rejects booking over UN38.3 / JT/T 1543-2025 documents | Ningbo booking stage | UN38.3 summary and SDS sent with the booking request | Shipper with Anxin |
| No EMPA registration when the goods arrive | Importer in Greece | Registration confirmed before booking | Importer / representative |
Questions
Through a Greek authorised representative appointed by written mandate, who registers it in EOAN's National Producers Register (EMPA) before sales start.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Yes. Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide removed it from the MSA cargo-report stage, but it still has to go to the carrier, which must refuse batteries that do not meet JT/T 1543-2025.
