Asia – Baltic via the Danish straits

This route runs through Ningbo-Zhoushan, where Zhejiang MSA's guide sets a 60% weight-balance test for battery containers, then follows a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic; at the far end is a Baltic port where the harbour master sets conditions for handling each dangerous-goods cargo.
Poland expects the importer to hold a BDO register entry for batteries. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.
What we need to start
Route profile
The Baltic is reached only through the Danish straits, where deep-draught ships are advised to take pilots, and its northern ports set ice-class restrictions every winter.
A BDO register entry for battery introducers with its number on the documents, and the EU-wide battery and ICS2 duties.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Gdynia and at customs in Poland.
Zhejiang MSA's January 2026 battery guide sets a concrete loading test: no half of the container's length may carry more than 60% of the cargo weight, and packages must be braced. On board, deck stowage should be inside fire-fighting coverage and shaded from direct sun, and under-deck stowage in holds with temperature probes.
What Anxin does: We ask for the load plan before stuffing and check the 60% split on the stuffing photos, and we pass the shading and away-from-heat stowage request to the carrier on the booking.
Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports, Gdynia included, are in the EU Emissions Trading System: 50% of the emissions of a voyage from China are covered, and the share of emissions for which lines must surrender allowances rises from 70% (for 2025 emissions) to 100% from 2027. Carriers can pass that cost on as a surcharge.
What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.
In the ports supervised by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, the dangerous goods on an arriving ship are declared through the National Single Window at least 24 hours ahead, or on departure from the previous port on a short leg, which is common for Baltic feeders. The harbour master then gives consent and sets conditions for entry and handling.
What Anxin does: Because most Chinese cargo reaches Gdynia by feeder, we check the DG data are final before the mainline ship leaves Ningbo, so the feeder's declaration is not built on a draft.
Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Poland: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.
What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Poland importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.
An importer has to ensure that batteries are accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in Poland can easily understand, as the Member State determines. Inserts and carton print are much simpler to adjust before packing in China.
What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Poland requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Ningbo filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Poland before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Gdynia.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uneven load rejected at the Ningbo packing check | Beilun / Meishan stuffing | Load plan checked before stuffing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Emissions surcharge changes between quote and sailing | EU port call | Surcharge shown as a separate line | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
| Feeder's declaration differs from the mainline booking | Port of Gdynia | DG data final before the mainline departure | Carrier / agent |
| Stock shipped without the label due from August 2026 | Importer in Poland | Label status confirmed before booking | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Poland requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.
Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
