This route runs out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season, then follows a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane; at the far end is the port of Rijeka.

The Croatia side follows the EU battery and customs pre-filing rules. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Fog season Apr–Jul
  • Qianwan export
  • National producer registration
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Consignee EORI

Route profile

The Qingdao → Rijeka route in brief

Origin port

Qingdao (Qianwan)

Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Qingdao → Rijeka shipments get held up: 6 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Rijeka and the Croatia market.

  1. Origin port

    Qingdao fog, April to July

The China Meteorological Administration lists sea fog among the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mostly between April and July and with a serious effect on shipping. At Qingdao a fog hold can shift a battery container onto another vessel, and its DG filings must follow.

What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.

  2. Origin port

    Shandong's provincial guide for ESS

ESS units loading at Qingdao fall under a Shandong MSA waterway safe-transport guide written for lithium battery energy storage systems at the province's coastal ports, so preparation should follow that guide alongside the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.

  3. Sea corridor

EU emissions trading now covers the whole inbound voyage share

Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports, Rijeka included, are in the EU Emissions Trading System: 50% of the emissions of a voyage from China are covered, and the share of emissions for which lines must surrender allowances rises from 70% (for 2025 emissions) to 100% from 2027. Carriers can pass that cost on as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  4. Import country

The truck leg out of Rijeka runs under ADR

Road delivery from Rijeka is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Croatia haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Qingdao.

  5. Import country

The ICS2 entry summary is due before loading in Qingdao

Sea cargo for the EU needs a complete Entry Summary Declaration under ICS2 Release 3, and for deep-sea containers it is due 24 hours before loading at the departure port. Carriers apply 'no manifest, no load', and a filing without a valid EORI number is rejected, so a data gap in Qingdao leaves the box on the quay.

What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Qingdao cut-off.

  6. Import country

Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Croatia: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Croatia importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Qingdao → Rijeka

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

Before loading in Qingdao

  • EU declaration of conformity and CE marking photo from the manufacturer
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For the importer in Croatia

  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates
  • Producer of record in Croatia and its national registration number
  • Instructions and safety information in the language Croatia requires

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Qingdao export filings, the carrier booking and the Croatia import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Qingdao → Rijeka: questions we are asked

ADR, which the EU applies to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E).

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
