Lithium batteries for Alexandria go through Qingdao's Qianwan terminals. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at Alexandria, where the DG manifest is due 48 hours before berthing.
Egypt requires a 19-digit ACID number on the bill of lading before the cargo leaves China. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult
Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Alexandria and the Egypt market.
The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as one of the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, with the season mainly from April to July and a serious effect on sea transport. Fog holds at Qingdao can move a battery box to another vessel, and the DG filings have to move with it.
What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.
Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Alexandria most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Alexandria uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.
At Alexandria, DG containers come ashore only with Civil Protection approval and may stay at most 7 days before moving to an outside facility under its supervision; the vessel's DG manifest is due 48 hours before berthing.
What Anxin does: We line up the importer's clearance and haulage before the ship reaches Alexandria, so the container can leave inside the 7-day window.
Since 22 July 2026 the Importers Register runs under Decree No. 271 of 2026: GOEIC decides within 15 days of a complete file, filing is going online, and foreign-owned companies have a limited, time-bound route in.
What Anxin does: We ask the Egyptian buyer to confirm its Importers Register status before we book the container for Alexandria.
Egyptian customs accepts a broker for a private importer only with a power of attorney registered at the Real Estate Registry or an e-authorisation on Nafeza, required by Customs Law No. 207 of 2020.
What Anxin does: We ask the importer which broker will clear the container and whether its Nafeza authorisation is in place before the ship arrives.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Qingdao export filings, the carrier booking and the Egypt import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fog hold forces a vessel change after filing | Qingdao, Apr–Jul | Slack in schedule; amendment-ready filing | Anxin with the declarant |
| Security incident near Bab el-Mandeb changes the routing or adds surcharges | Southern Red Sea | Routing and surcharges stated in writing before booking | Carrier, checked by Anxin |
| Container exceeds the 7-day stay | Alexandria / El Dekheila | Clearance and trucks arranged before arrival | Importer |
Questions
Under Decision No. 2171/2020 the Civil Protection Administration may allow dangerous-goods containers to stay no more than 7 days before transfer to an external facility.
Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.
Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
