From Qingdao to Felixstowe, cargo moves from Shandong through Qingdao's Qianwan terminals, crosses a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and is discharged at a port where each hazardous import is notified through Destin8 and approved in writing.

British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

Route profile

How Qingdao → Felixstowe differs from other lanes

Origin port

Qingdao (Qianwan)

Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.

Import country

United Kingdom

UK producer registration, a compliance scheme for portable batteries above 1 tonne a year, and import clearance through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Qingdao → Felixstowe shipments get held up: 6 points

Listed from loading in Qingdao to import into United Kingdom, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Qingdao fog, April to July

The China Meteorological Administration lists sea fog among the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mostly between April and July and with a serious effect on shipping. At Qingdao a fog hold can shift a battery container onto another vessel, and its DG filings must follow.

What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.

  2. Origin port

    Shandong's provincial guide for ESS

ESS units loading at Qingdao fall under a Shandong MSA waterway safe-transport guide written for lithium battery energy storage systems at the province's coastal ports, so preparation should follow that guide alongside the IMDG Code.

What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.

  3. Sea corridor

Drawn via Suez, sailed mostly via the Cape

The map on this page shows the corridor through Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez, but Sea-Intelligence figures for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%, with 27% for North Europe services and 57% for the Mediterranean. The service that calls at Felixstowe decides between Suez and the Cape of Good Hope, and with it the distance, the waters and the possible transhipment ports.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  4. Destination port

Destin8 notification and written approval from the port's DGSAs

Every dangerous-goods container passing through Felixstowe needs prior written approval from the port's Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors, and imports are notified electronically through Destin8. The same notification is relayed to Harwich Haven Authority, so one inconsistent entry travels to both.

What Anxin does: We check the UN number, class, packages and weights the carrier will use against the shipper's declaration before the vessel leaves Qingdao.

  5. Import country

Bin symbol and capacity label under the 2008 regulations

Great Britain still labels batteries under the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008: a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol of a set minimum size on every battery, moved to the packaging only when the battery is too small or cannot practically be marked, and a capacity in mAh or Ah on portable rechargeables and on the front of their packaging.

What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Qingdao, because relabelling after discharge at Felixstowe means opening dangerous goods packages.

  6. Import country

Road haulage from Felixstowe under the carriage regulations

Once the box is off the quay at Felixstowe, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.

What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Felixstowe matches what left Qingdao.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Qingdao → Felixstowe

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Qingdao

  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Crossed-out bin symbol and mAh/Ah capacity label checked on battery and packaging photos

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • DG data for the Destin8 hazardous notification and DGSA approval
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

For the importer in United Kingdom

  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR
  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Qingdao filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Qingdao → Felixstowe: questions we are asked

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol at a minimum size, on the packaging if the battery is too small, and for portable rechargeables a capacity in mAh or Ah on the battery and the packaging front.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
