Lithium batteries for Piraeus go out of Shenzhen's Yantian and Shekou terminals. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at a port where the terminal system decides segregation and stacking for each class 9 box.

Greece registers battery producers in EOAN's EMPA register. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Greek-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

How Shenzhen → Piraeus differs from other lanes

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Shenzhen to Piraeus

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Piraeus and at customs in Greece.

  1. Origin port

Dongguan's packaging certificate data is shared

Dongguan, home to more than 500 battery companies, supplies much of the cargo leaving Shenzhen. Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data, described as a first in China, and act jointly against concealed and false declarations; the one-box route to Yantian, 409 containers by then, relies on the same record.

What Anxin does: We compare the packaging certificate with the MSA cargo report (UN number, packaging code, number of packages) before either goes in, so the shared data shows no gap.

  2. Sea corridor

EU emissions trading now covers the whole inbound voyage share

Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports, Piraeus included, are in the EU Emissions Trading System: 50% of the emissions of a voyage from China are covered, and the share of emissions for which lines must surrender allowances rises from 70% (for 2025 emissions) to 100% from 2027. Carriers can pass that cost on as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  3. Destination port

A terminal dangerous goods file 24 hours before arrival

Piraeus Container Terminal wants dangerous goods notified to its Department of Environment and Port Services at least 24 hours before the ship arrives, with a multimodal dangerous goods form to IMDG standards, the terminal's own DG spreadsheet and, for units in transit, the IMO dangerous cargo manifest.

What Anxin does: We make sure the multimodal dangerous goods form from the shipper is complete and matches the booking before loading in Shenzhen, since the Piraeus file is built from it.

  4. Import country

Instructions and safety information in the language of Greece

Importers must make sure batteries come with instructions and safety information in a language end-users in Greece easily understand, as that Member State decides. Printed inserts and carton text are far easier to change before the goods are packed in China.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Greece requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

  5. Import country

The ICS2 entry summary is due before loading in Shenzhen

For Piraeus, EU security pre-filing happens at the other end of the voyage: the ICS2 entry summary must reach the system 24 hours before the container is loaded in Shenzhen. No filing means no loading, and a missing EORI number is enough to reject it.

What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Shenzhen cut-off.

  6. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

The Battery Regulation asks the importer to put its own name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address, with a single contact point, on the battery. Only when the battery's size or nature makes that impossible may the details move to the packaging or an accompanying document, so a Greece importer's details need to reach the factory before printing.

What Anxin does: We pass the Greece importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Shenzhen → Piraeus

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Shenzhen, before the box is loaded

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For the importer in Greece

  • Instructions and safety information in the language Greece requires
  • EMPA registration of the producer (or Greek authorised representative)
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Greece before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Piraeus.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Shenzhen to Piraeus

Through a Greek authorised representative appointed by written mandate, who registers it in EOAN's National Producers Register (EMPA) before sales start.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
