Lithium batteries for Rotterdam go from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou. On the way they face a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and they arrive at a port where every dangerous-goods container is declared through Portbase once the ship leaves its last port.

The Netherlands is still building its national battery register, so proof of registration runs through the collective schemes. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Portbase DG data per container
  • MyOPEN registration number
  • Dutch-language safety information

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Rotterdam apart

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Destination port

Rotterdam

Dangerous goods notified container by container through Portbase as soon as the ship leaves its previous port, with berths near housing closed to ships carrying larger hazardous loads.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Shenzhen to Rotterdam

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Rotterdam and at customs in Netherlands.

  1. Origin port

Factory stuffing in Dongguan, loading at Yantian: avoid a second opening

Much Shenzhen battery export is stuffed inland and trucked to the terminal. In May 2026 Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA ran a cross-regional 'one-box' pilot: four battery containers were inspected jointly at the Dongguan factory and loaded at Yantian without being opened again. It shows that the inspection record made at the factory is what matters at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Rotterdam decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Destination port

Portbase notification per container, sent once the ship sails for Rotterdam

Rotterdam's Harbour Master expects the dangerous goods on an inbound ship to be notified through Portbase as soon as possible after it leaves its previous port. The notification lists hazardous substances container by container, so each class 9 box from Shenzhen has to be described exactly as it was booked.

What Anxin does: We make sure the UN number, proper shipping name, packages and weights on the booking match the shipper's declaration before loading, so the container-level Portbase data for Rotterdam line up with the box.

  4. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Netherlands for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Netherlands we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

  5. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Netherlands has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Rotterdam.

What Anxin does: We pass the Netherlands importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Shenzhen → Rotterdam

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Shenzhen

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For the importer in Netherlands

  • Collective scheme and registration number used in the Netherlands
  • Repacking planned outside the port, after onward transport

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Netherlands before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Rotterdam.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Rotterdam route

At least 24 hours before the vessel arrives, or before it leaves the previous port if the voyage is shorter. The port authority then decides where the ship may berth and discharge.

Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports are in the EU Emissions Trading System, covering 50% of the emissions of a voyage from outside the EU. Lines must surrender allowances for 70% of 2025 emissions and 100% from 2027, and may pass the cost on as a surcharge.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
