This route runs out of Tianjin's Xingang terminals, where customs can supervise stuffing at the factory and the box goes straight to the ship on a booked slot, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is a port run under its own dangerous-goods ordinance, which tracks every class 9 box electronically from the Elbe to the rail siding.

The German side adds producer registration with stiftung ear and the EU Battery Regulation's labelling calendar. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Tianjin Xingang export
  • Factory-supervised loading
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Final UN numbers and package counts
  • Consignee EORI

Route profile

The Tianjin → Hamburg route in brief

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Destination port

Hamburg

Every dangerous-goods movement notified to GEGIS, at least 24 hours before the ship reaches the port, with terminal storage capped by quantity limits and safety distances.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Tianjin and Hamburg: 5 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Hamburg and at customs in Germany.

  1. Origin port

Packaging appraisal is still the first step at Tianjin

Export dangerous-goods packaging must pass use appraisal in China before the goods can leave. Tianjin port's 2025 measures shortened appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group handles lithium DG containers, but without the appraisal certificate the rest of the filing cannot proceed.

What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.

  2. Origin port

Tianjin's supervised factory loading and port slots

Under Tianjin Customs' 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model, officers supervise stuffing at the factory, the declaration is lodged early through the single window, and the box enters the port in a slot booked on the customs–port platform before going straight to the ship; inspections take place in closed yards at the Beijiang and Dongjiang terminals. The gain holds only if stuffing date, slot and declared data agree.

What Anxin does: We fix the stuffing date against the vessel's DG cut-off first, then book the entry slot, and check that the declaration, the packing certificate and the container number agree before the truck leaves, so the box is not diverted to an inspection yard for a data mismatch.

  3. Sea corridor

    Container losses off South Africa

Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  4. Destination port

GEGIS notification 24 hours out, corrections within an hour

Hamburg's dangerous goods ordinance (GGBVOHH) requires the ship's dangerous goods to be notified at least 24 hours before it reaches the port area, through GEGIS, the port's dangerous goods information system. Any change to the notified data must be reported without delay and at the latest within one hour. The same system is fed again when a class 9 container moves by rail inside the port or is set down at a terminal.

What Anxin does: We treat the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking as final before the vessel leaves Tianjin, and pass any correction to the carrier immediately so the carrier's notification stays accurate.

  5. Import country

    German-language instructions and safety information

The importer must make sure each battery travels with instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in the Member State easily understand, as that Member State determines. For consumer goods going to Germany, the practical reading is German-language safety text, and it has to be in the carton when the goods are placed on the market.

What Anxin does: When we review packing photos we note whether the inserts or labels show the required language, and we raise gaps with the shipper before stuffing rather than after arrival.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Tianjin → Hamburg

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Tianjin end

  • Stuffing date, port-entry slot and DG cut-off at Tianjin agreed in that order
  • Packaging use-appraisal certificate issued before the MSA cargo report is filed
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Final DG data on the booking (UN number, proper shipping name, packages, gross mass) before departure, for the carrier's GEGIS notification
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type

For import into Germany

  • Instructions and safety information in German in the retail packaging
  • Producer / authorised representative for Germany and the Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE for each brand and battery category
  • Confirmation that the battery category's OfH participation is in place (BattDG)

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Tianjin filings, the carrier booking and the Germany import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Tianjin → Hamburg route

The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Germany requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
