From Tianjin to Klaipeda, cargo moves from North China through Tianjin Xingang, crosses a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic, and is discharged at the port of Klaipeda.

The Lithuania side follows the EU battery and customs pre-filing rules. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Factory-supervised loading
  • Bohai Bay winter ice
  • National producer registration
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

How Tianjin → Klaipeda differs from other lanes

Origin port

Tianjin (Xingang)

North China's main container gateway, where Tianjin Customs lets DG containers be inspected at the factory and loaded on arrival within a booked port slot, and where the Bohai Bay freezes at its edges in mid-winter.

Sea corridor

Asia – Baltic via the Danish straits

The Baltic is reached only through the Danish straits, where deep-draught ships are advised to take pilots, and its northern ports set ice-class restrictions every winter.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Tianjin → Klaipeda shipments get held up: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Klaipeda and the Lithuania market.

  1. Origin port

Ice at the Haihe estuary in winter

Every winter the Bohai Sea ices over, and the Haihe estuary at Tianjin is one of the harder-hit areas. For 2021/22 the national marine forecast centre put the peak ice period between mid-January and mid-February, with floating ice about 5 nautical miles out in Bohai Bay. Ice and cold slow port work just as the Chinese New Year peak arrives.

What Anxin does: For January and February sailings from Tianjin we add slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off and confirm the vessel's berthing window with the carrier the week before loading.

  2. Origin port

Packaging appraisal comes first, even with Tianjin's quicker release

China requires use appraisal of export dangerous-goods packaging before the goods may be exported. Tianjin port's 2025 facilitation measures shortened packaging appraisal time for lithium battery exports through quick release, and Tianjin Port Group provides port services for lithium DG containers, but the appraisal certificate is still a precondition for the rest of the filing.

What Anxin does: We check at quotation that the packaging maker has its performance appraisal and apply for the use appraisal as soon as the packing is fixed, so the certificate is in hand before the MSA filing.

  3. Sea corridor

Suez or Cape before the Baltic even starts

Before the Danish straits, the voyage from Asia is the same as for North Europe: Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing at 27% for North Europe services, so most boxes still go round the Cape of Good Hope, where SAMSA estimates about 35% of 2024's lost containers went overboard.

What Anxin does: We quote the Suez and Cape routings separately when both are offered and apply the CINS stuffing checks strictly on Cape sailings.

  4. Import country

A producer registration in Lithuania before the first sale

The Battery Regulation makes registration national: whoever first makes batteries available in Lithuania must be entered in that Member State's producer register, and the authority has up to 12 weeks to grant a complete application. A brand based outside Lithuania cannot rely on an EU registration held elsewhere; it needs an authorised representative for producer responsibility in Lithuania.

What Anxin does: At booking we ask which company is the producer of record in Lithuania and for its registration number there, so a missing registration surfaces while the goods are still in Tianjin rather than after discharge in Klaipeda.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead limits in portable batteries

Annex I of the Battery Regulation caps mercury at 0.0005 %, cadmium at 0.002 % and lead at 0.01 % by weight in portable batteries, and the lead limit has applied since 18 August 2024. Market surveillance in Lithuania can ask the importer to show that the goods meet these limits.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for its substance declaration or test report reference and file it with the shipping documents for the Lithuania importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Tianjin → Klaipeda

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Tianjin end

  • Packaging use-appraisal certificate issued before the MSA cargo report is filed
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For the importer in Lithuania

  • Producer of record in Lithuania and its national registration number
  • Haulier in Lithuania briefed with UN number, class 9 and tunnel code (E) for the road leg
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Tianjin export filings, the carrier booking and the Lithuania import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Tianjin to Klaipeda

The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.

Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.

Tianjin Customs offers a 'supervised factory loading, direct loading on port arrival' model: stuffing is supervised at the factory, the box enters the port in a booked slot and is loaded directly. Whether a given shipment can use it depends on the customs arrangement for the exporter and the port slot; we check both when you book.
