Lithium batteries for Saint-Nazaire go out of Xiamen's Haicang and Songyu terminals on the Taiwan Strait. On the way they face a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and they arrive at the port of Saint-Nazaire.

France asks for a batteries IDU and eco-organisme membership before the first sale. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • Xiamen export
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • IDU (batteries stream)

Route profile

What sets Xiamen → Saint-Nazaire apart

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Xiamen → Saint-Nazaire route

Listed from loading in Xiamen to import into France, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Saint-Nazaire

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Saint-Nazaire most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Saint-Nazaire uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

The IDU: France's proof that the producer is registered

Every producer in a French REP stream has needed a unique identifier since 2022, and it is the proof of registration in ADEME's SYDEREP register. When the producer joins an eco-organisme, the eco-organisme does the registration; the IDU then has to appear in the terms of sale or on the website and be given to buyers who ask.

What Anxin does: We ask the French importer for the batteries-stream IDU of whoever acts as producer before we book, so the buyer's own IDU check does not stop the goods after they reach Saint-Nazaire.

  4. Import country

Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

The Battery Regulation's general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label implementing act, if later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027, linked to a battery passport for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Where the battery is too small, both go on the packaging and accompanying documents.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the France importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  5. Import country

User-replaceable batteries in appliances from 18 February 2027

Article 11 of the Battery Regulation says that from 18 February 2027 portable batteries inside appliances must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user using commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, except under limited derogations. Appliances sold in France after that date need a design that complies.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for France we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Xiamen export filings, the carrier booking and the France import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
