Xiamen to Hamburg
South China Sea · Malacca Strait · Indian Ocean · Bab-el-Mandeb · Suez Canal · Strait of Gibraltar · English Channel · Baltic Sea
This route runs through Xiamen, the port for more than 90% of Fujian's lithium battery exports, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is a port run under its own dangerous-goods ordinance, which tracks every class 9 box electronically from the Elbe to the rail siding.
Germany expects the battery to be registered, labelled and pre-declared before it is loaded in China. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Hamburg and at customs in Germany.
Leaving Xiamen, ships are in the Taiwan Strait at once. A Chinese government weather account says the strait's funnel effect adds 1–2 Beaufort levels to the wind, and that the north-east monsoon of winter and spring brings force 7 or more on about two days in three. Lashing on container ships should be secured accordingly.
What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Hamburg decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
Hamburg's dangerous goods ordinance (GGBVOHH) requires the ship's dangerous goods to be notified at least 24 hours before it reaches the port area, through GEGIS, the port's dangerous goods information system. Any change to the notified data must be reported without delay and at the latest within one hour. The same system is fed again when a class 9 container moves by rail inside the port or is set down at a terminal.
What Anxin does: We treat the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking as final before the vessel leaves Xiamen, and pass any correction to the carrier immediately so the carrier's notification stays accurate.
Whoever first makes batteries available in Germany is the producer and must hold a registration with stiftung ear for each brand and battery category. A non-German brand cannot register itself; it needs one authorised representative in Germany. Since 1 January 2026 every category must also be linked to an approved producer responsibility organisation (OfH), and registrations that were not updated by 15 January 2026 were withdrawn by law.
What Anxin does: We ask who acts as producer for this shipment (importer, brand owner or authorised representative) and for the Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE before the container is booked, so the question is answered while the goods are still in China.
Road delivery from Hamburg is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).
What Anxin does: We give the Germany haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Xiamen.
Stationary battery energy storage systems placed on the EU market since 18 August 2024 must be safe in normal operation, with technical documentation showing tests against the Annex V parameters, including thermal shock, short-circuit protection, over-discharge and thermal propagation. ESS buyers in Germany increasingly ask for that file before delivery.
What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Germany we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Xiamen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Germany before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Hamburg.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cargo shift in winter monsoon seas | Taiwan Strait, Oct–Apr | CINS blocking and bracing checked on photos | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| DG data on the notification differs from the cargo | Port of Hamburg | Booking DG data frozen before departure; corrections passed to the carrier at once | Anxin with the carrier |
| Batteries arrive without a valid German producer registration | Placing on the German market after clearance | Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE and OfH status requested before booking; shipment planned only once the producer role is clear | Importer / producer |
Questions
The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.
Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports are in the EU Emissions Trading System, covering 50% of the emissions of a voyage from outside the EU. Lines must surrender allowances for 70% of 2025 emissions and 100% from 2027, and may pass the cost on as a surcharge.
For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
