This route runs out of Xiamen's Haicang and Songyu terminals on the Taiwan Strait, then follows an Arabian Sea passage towards the Gulf; at the far end is Salalah, where cargo details go to the port 72 hours ahead and damaged DG boxes stay on board.

Oman's customs single window, Bayan, has required the manifest 36 hours before arrival since May 2026. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Taiwan Strait monsoon Oct–Apr
  • Xiamen export
  • Manifest in Bayan 36 h before arrival
  • Market labelling before sale
  • Written DG approval (Port of Salalah)

Route profile

What sets Xiamen → Salalah apart

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – Arabian Sea & the Gulf

The Arabian Sea in the monsoon season, GNSS jamming near the Gulf of Oman and, for ports inside the Gulf, a Hormuz passage rated SEVERE in September 2026.

Where this route gets difficult

5 points to plan for on the Xiamen → Salalah route

Listed from loading in Xiamen to import into Oman, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

The Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon starts at the port

Ships leaving Xiamen enter the Taiwan Strait straight away. A Chinese government weather account notes that the strait's funnel effect makes winds 1–2 Beaufort levels stronger than outside it, and that the winter and spring north-east monsoon brings force 7 or stronger winds on about two-thirds of days. Container ships are advised to secure lashing.

What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Origin port

Pre-loading meeting and a ship plan at Xiamen

For large battery consignments Xiamen MSA offers pre-review of key DG documents, a pre-loading meeting where ship, cargo owner, terminal and agent agree deck stowage and emergency measures, and a 'one ship, one plan' checklist from gate-in to departure. In June 2026 it reported 104 energy-storage containers of 36 tonnes each loaded on a multipurpose ship for Houston.

What Anxin does: We send the key documents for pre-review before the formal filing and bring the stowage and emergency details the meeting will ask for.

  3. Sea corridor

    GNSS jamming across the approaches

The JMIC reports persistent GNSS jamming and spoofing across the Hormuz approaches, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf, and rates the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea MODERATE. Anomalous AIS positions and speeds are reported in the same areas, so vessel positions shown in tracking tools are less reliable there.

What Anxin does: We rely on the carrier's own schedule updates rather than third-party AIS positions when we give you an arrival estimate for Salalah.

  4. Cargo at sea

Heat inside the box, not just outside it

CINS lists high temperature inside the container among the key transport risks for lithium-ion cargo. Its guidance prefers on-deck stowage away from heat sources and always protected from direct sunlight; the Zhejiang MSA guide adds shading for on-deck boxes and temperature-monitored holds for under-deck stowage. On a warm corridor, where the container sits on the ship matters.

What Anxin does: We pass the carrier the stowage preference (away from heat, shaded) as a booking remark and ask how it will be handled; the carrier's stowage planner makes the final decision.

  5. Destination port

Damaged DG boxes are not discharged

Leaking or damaged dangerous-goods packages or containers may not be discharged at Salalah unless the Port Authority decides otherwise after inspection, and dangerous cargo needing special handling gets less free time than ordinary boxes. Packing quality in Xiamen decides whether the container can come off the ship at all.

What Anxin does: We check CINS-level blocking and bracing on the stuffing photos in Xiamen and ask for photos of the sealed container before it goes to the terminal.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Xiamen → Salalah

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Xiamen

  • For ESS: carriage type (container ship or multipurpose), class 9 terminal and pre-voyage meeting confirmed
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Stuffing and securing photos showing undamaged packages

For the shipping line

  • Final DG data for the written approval and the 24-hour DG manifest
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the Oman end

  • Market labelling agreed with the importer before production

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Xiamen filings, the carrier booking and the Oman import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Xiamen → Salalah: questions we are asked

Electronically in Bayan at least 36 hours before the vessel arrives, a rule in force since 3 May 2026.

Between June and September India's southwest monsoon brings rough seas and squalls to the Arabian Sea that regularly disrupt port operations, so we check blocking and bracing on the stuffing photos and allow slack in the delivery plan.

Yes. Xiamen MSA reported 104 ESS containers of 36 tonnes each loaded for Houston in June 2026. Xiamen's ESS guide 2.0 requires a pre-voyage meeting and use of a class 9 qualified terminal.
