Xi'an to Duisburg
Xi'an · Alashankou · Kuryk · Alat · Tbilisi · Istanbul · Duisburg
Xi'an and Duisburg are linked by trains and by a 2025 memorandum between their two inland ports,1 but most China–Europe trains reach Germany through Belarus and Poland. That route is quoted case by case after compliance screening; the alternative is a Middle Corridor plan that ends outside Germany and needs an onward leg quoted on its own.
This page assesses the Duisburg lane and does not present a through service. Lithium batteries are screened case by case and depend on every operator in the chain and on country acceptance.
What we need to start
Route profile

The Middle Corridor to the Bosphorus area. The leg from Istanbul to Duisburg is not part of this page and is quoted on its own.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Chinese origin station to the border, through the transit countries and to the consignee.
Poland closed its border with Belarus on 12 September 2025 for the Zapad military exercise, a shutdown that POLITICO described as hitting the route that moves about 90% of rail freight between China and the EU.2 Yicai Global reported on 30 September 2025 that after Poland reopened the border, more than 130 Chinese freight trains were stranded at Brest.3
What Anxin does: For a northern-route quote we ask the operator for a holding place on the Belarusian side and tell the consignee when the border status changes.
The European Commission's FAQ says goods that originate in a third country and only transit through Russia are not "exported from Russia" for several sanctions prohibitions, but listed goods already in Russia and meant for export are, and the circumvention ban in Article 12 prohibits knowing and intentional participation in activities that circumvent the measures.4,5 Whether that reaches a given shipment is a question for the shipper's counsel.
What Anxin does: If a shipper asks for a route through Russia or Belarus, we ask their sanctions counsel and the carrier to confirm in writing before we open a quote.
CAREC's 2022 monitoring found that Dostyk, the Kazakh station opposite Alashankou, was among the most time-consuming rail points for inbound traffic at 76.1 hours, and that the gauge change took about three hours on average.6 PTC Holding reports that the Dostyk transhipment terminal doubled its capacity to 320,000 TEU.7 Those are measured and announced figures from earlier years and not a promise of current times.
What Anxin does: We ask for a hold point at Dostyk and a named operator for the transfer.
The OECD notes that the Caspian fleet is not in line with demand, causing congestion.8 The Marmaray tunnel under the Bosphorus carries freight at night and its information sheet describes the trains as free of dangerous goods.9 No official source we have read shows a through Xi'an–Duisburg Middle Corridor service that takes class 9 lithium cargo, so we do not describe one.
What Anxin does: We scope the Middle Corridor leg only as far as Istanbul and quote the onward road or rail leg with its own acceptance.
Stiftung ear states that battery registration is a legally required permit and that batteries may be placed on the German market only once the registration order has been received; a producer without a German subsidiary needs an authorised representative located in Germany.10 Directive 2008/68/EC applies ADR and RID to national as well as international transport inside the EU, and member states may set justified rules on routes.11
What Anxin does: We ask the German importer for its battery registration status and its authorised representative before the shipment is booked.
Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer, the operators and the consignee. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern route closed or backlogged | Brest / Małaszewicze | Holding place named; Middle Corridor as alternative | Operator / shipper |
| Sanctions exposure on a Russian transit | Russia / Belarus | Written confirmation from counsel | Shipper |
| Caspian congestion | Kuryk / Alat | Separate booking and holding point | Operator |
| Importer not registered | Germany | Registration checked before booking | German importer |
Questions
We have not seen an official source that confirms one for lithium cargo, so we do not describe one.
Yes. They may be placed on the German market only after the registration order has been received.10
By sea instead
Sea freight leaves from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lianyungang. See all sea routes from China. The sea route pages also cover Shenzhen to Germany.
Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.

We check operator and country acceptance for Xi'an → Duisburg before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
