Yiwu to Almaty
Yiwu · Khorgos – Altynkol · Almaty
Almaty is the easy end of this corridor: Khorgos, the crossing, is 361 km away by road and the dry port there is built for transfers between two gauges. The effort is at the Chinese origin station, where the shipper has to hand over four documents before the railway will carry battery cargo at all.
Five points for the Khorgos corridor follow. Acceptance of lithium batteries is screened case by case and depends on the operator and on Chinese and Kazakh acceptance.
What we need to start
Route profile
A market and export city in eastern China, far from the border: the rail haul west to Xinjiang is long.
Rail crossing and gauge-transfer dry port, then the Kazakh network to the city.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Chinese origin station to the border, through the transit countries and to the consignee.
The Chinese rail guidance on consumer lithium batteries says the shipper must submit to the railway a product safety test report, a rail transport conditions appraisal report, a rail packaging inspection report, a safety commitment and emergency measures, and is responsible for their authenticity; the carrier checks identity and documents and safety-inspects the cargo, and may not carry cargo that has not passed that inspection.1 A Yiwu exporter used to sea documents arrives with a different file.
What Anxin does: We list the Chinese rail documents on the first reply and tell the shipper plainly which ones the maker, not the forwarder, has to supply.
UN ESCAP's assessment records three 1,435 mm and three 1,520 mm tracks through the Altynkol customs point, where trains are subjected to X-ray examination and radiation control.2 Containers are lifted between wagons of the two gauges, a process the same report describes as relatively fast compared with bogie exchange.2 The assessment predates the dry port's later extensions, so the detail is a starting point to be confirmed.
What Anxin does: We tell the shipper that an X-ray image of the load is part of the crossing and ask that packages be loaded so they read cleanly on an image.
Khorgos Gateway handled over 372,000 TEU in 2025 and added ten broad-gauge tracks during the year.3 CAREC's 2022 monitoring found outbound trains at Horgos spending 34.8 hours on average, noted that regular corridor trains were side-tracked to let high-priority Eurasian container expresses pass, and said Kazakhstan's privatised wagon supply means the shipper must negotiate with private wagon owners.4 These are historical measurements, not a promise of current times.
What Anxin does: We separate the wagon-supply question from the border question in the quote and ask who holds the wagon contract.
A Kazakh official told The Astana Times in 2025 that delays at Altynkol–Khorgos can come from differences in regulations, inconsistencies in information systems and the volume of documentation, and that the two sides were discussing synchronised procedures, more digitalisation and possible joint customs checkpoints.5 An error in any one data field travels with the cargo to the next system.
What Anxin does: We check that the Chinese export entry and the Kazakh import data describe the cargo identically before the train is made up.
Khorgos is 361 km from Almaty by road and 670 km from Urumqi on the Chinese side.5 Kazakhstan has been an ADR contracting party since 26 July 2001,6 so a truck taking the cargo from the dry port is working inside the European road agreement, with its documents, driver training and vehicle equipment.
What Anxin does: We ask the Almaty haulier for an ADR document set and a pickup plan for the dry port before booking.
Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer, the operators and the consignee. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documents missing at origin | Chinese rail station | Checklist on first reply | Shipper / maker |
| Train side-tracked behind priority trains | Horgos | Planned buffer; operator confirmation | Operator |
| Wagon supply not secured | Altynkol | Wagon contract named | Wagon owner / operator |
| Data mismatch between systems | Border | Cross-check before departure | Anxin with the declarant |
By sea instead
Sea freight leaves from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lianyungang. See all sea routes from China.
Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.

We check operator and country acceptance for Yiwu → Almaty before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
