Kunming to Bangkok
Kunming · Mohan – Boten · Luang Prabang · Vang Vieng · Vientiane South · Thanaleng · Nong Khai · Bangkok
Cargo from Kunming rides standard gauge to Vientiane South, then has to be lifted into metre-gauge wagons for Thailand. That second handling is where a lithium shipment is most exposed: it is a lift, a second set of rules and a third customs system in one week.
Five points for the corridor through Laos into Thailand follow. Lithium batteries on this chain are screened case by case, subject to operator and country acceptance, because every handover is a separate acceptance.
What we need to start
Route profile
Start of the standard-gauge line through northern Laos.
Standard gauge to Vientiane South, a transfer yard, then Thailand's 1,000 mm metre-gauge line over the Friendship Bridge.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Chinese origin station to the border, through the transit countries and to the consignee.
China State Railway Group explains that the China-Laos Railway is built to 1,435 mm gauge while Thai railways are metre gauge, so goods must be unloaded from one train and reloaded onto another.1 The Vientiane South yard opened on 1 July 2022 with one standard-gauge and two metre-gauge tracks, designed for up to 25 metre-gauge wagons at once and about 800,000 tonnes a year.1 Each lift is another chance for a package to shift, which matters for a battery pack on a pallet.
What Anxin does: We ask for the stowage plan inside the container to be reviewed for a crane lift, with blocking and bracing photographed before sealing.
Freight bound for third countries through Laos is inspected only in part at Boten, then handled in the Thanaleng supervision area after arrival at Vientiane South.2 Thanaleng itself sits close to the Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge and connects to both railways.3 A transit declaration that is wrong in Laos is expensive to correct from a Thai office.
What Anxin does: We confirm who files the Lao transit declaration and that the declared goods match the Chinese export data line by line.
Thailand's Ministry of Transport test-ran a rail freight service from Laem Chabang to Nong Khai and back on 18 September 2026 under a public-private model.4 Earlier, Thailand's state railway began intermodal services to Laem Chabang in August 2019 over the Friendship Bridge, with a compact container terminal at Thanaleng.5 Capacity and acceptance of dangerous goods on those services are operator matters we do not assume.
What Anxin does: We treat the Thai rail leg as optional and quote road delivery from Nong Khai as a comparison when the railway cannot confirm class 9 acceptance.
The Thai Customs Department issued Announcement No. 68/2568 on 13 May 2025, amending electronic customs transit for goods moving by rail with new reporting requirements, revised control measures and time limits, and force majeure procedures.6 The broker has to work to the amended procedure, not the 2021 one it replaced.
What Anxin does: We ask the Thai broker to confirm in writing which transit procedure applies and who reports at the departure and exit checkpoints.
Thailand's Department of Land Transport requires dangerous-goods transport documents in Thai for domestic haulage and in Thai and English for cross-border haulage.7 Thailand is not an ADR party,8 so the Thai documentation requirement is a national one, and English-only paperwork does not meet the cross-border wording.
What Anxin does: We ask for the dangerous-goods declaration to be prepared in both languages and for the Thai haulier to confirm its documentation set before the truck is booked.
Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer, the operators and the consignee. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pallet shifts during the gauge-transfer lift | Vientiane South yard | Stowage review and bracing photos | Packing site and Anxin |
| Laos transit declaration mismatches Chinese export data | Laos | Line-by-line data check | Anxin with the declarant |
| Thai railway cannot confirm class 9 acceptance | Nong Khai → Bangkok | Road delivery quoted as fallback | Thai carrier |
| Truck stopped for English-only documents | Thailand road leg | Bilingual DG paperwork | Thai haulier |
Questions
Not on the evidence we have. China State Railway Group describes reloading between the two gauges at Vientiane South,1 so the journey is a chain of services. Whether and how a battery shipment is accepted is confirmed for each leg.
Thailand requires transport documents in Thai for domestic hauls and in Thai and English for cross-border hauls.7 The haulier confirms the rest.
By sea instead
Sea freight leaves from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lianyungang. See all sea routes from China. The sea route pages also cover Shenzhen to Thailand.
Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.

We check operator and country acceptance for Kunming → Bangkok before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
