Turkey is where the Middle Corridor stops being a chain of ferries and broad-gauge lines and becomes a standard-gauge railway into Europe. The Turkish side has its own written rules for dangerous goods, and its best-known rail tunnel does not take them.

At a glance

Turkey: three facts that shape the lane

Rail rules

TCDD permission for what RID does not define

TCDD's general order on carrying dangerous goods by rail covers domestic and international carriage and requires the permission of the TCDD General Directorate for goods not defined in the order or in RID.1

Tunnel

Marmaray freight runs at night and without dangerous goods

Rail Cargo Group describes its Marmaray freight trains as free of dangerous goods and says they pass at night.2,3

Road rules

ADR since 2010

Turkey acceded to ADR on 22 February 2010.4

The corridor

Kars is the gate, Istanbul is the question

The Baku–Tbilisi–Kars line, together with the Marmaray tunnel, lets freight trains run between Europe and the Caspian without the Bosphorus ferries, but firms interviewed by the OECD report bottlenecks at Akhalkalaki and seasonal difficulties between Kars and Akhalkalaki in heavy winter.5 The Duisport chief executive described Turkey as a key hub on the Middle Corridor with strong demand and growth potential.6

None of that decides whether a given lithium container can use a given train. That is screened case by case, subject to operator and country acceptance, with the Turkish broker asked early which side of the Bosphorus the consignee sits on.

Questions

Turkey: questions we are asked

One operator describes its Marmaray freight as free of dangerous goods;2 a lithium load is screened case by case before any plan relies on the tunnel.

Yes, since 22 February 2010.4

By sea instead

Compare with sea freight from China

Choosing a mode

Each mode accepts lithium batteries on its own terms

Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.
