Urumqi to Odesa
Urumqi · Khorgos · Kuryk · Alat · Tbilisi · Batumi · Chornomorsk · Odesa
An Odesa-bound container from Xinjiang can go west on the Middle Corridor and cross the Black Sea on the ferry Ukraine restarted between Chornomorsk and Batumi in 2025.1 It is the longest lane in this section and the one with the most hand-overs, so we treat it as a plan to confirm, not a standing product.
Five points for the Urumqi–Odesa lane follow. Lithium batteries are screened case by case and depend on two ferry operators, three railways and the insurance position.
What we need to start
Route profile
The regional rail hub west of which trains reach the Khorgos gate to Kazakhstan.
Kazakh rail, a Caspian ferry, Azerbaijani and Georgian rail to the Black Sea, then a ferry to Chornomorsk and road or rail to Odesa.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Chinese origin station to the border, through the transit countries and to the consignee.
Caucasus Business Journal reported in September 2026 that cargo from China to Georgia was taking roughly six weeks, up from under three, after diverted traffic pushed volumes at Aktau to two to three times what its rail links routinely handled and container processing on Azerbaijan's railway stretched to around two weeks.2 Every Odesa container passes both points.
What Anxin does: We ask each operator for its current backlog before quoting and do not carry an older transit estimate forward.
Ukrzaliznytsia said ferry voyages from Chornomorsk to Batumi on 18 and 26 March 2025 were the first since 2022 and ran in "information silence"; an earlier plan to restart on 9 July 2024 had not happened.1 Sailings that are not published cannot be planned like a timetable, and the line's acceptance of class 9 cargo is its own decision.
What Anxin does: We ask the ferry operator for written acceptance of the lithium load and a sailing window before the container leaves Urumqi.
Under Georgia's New Computerized Transit System a Georgian guarantee became mandatory for cargo transiting Georgia from 1 June 2025, covering road and sea transit, and goods under a TIR carnet do not need a transit declaration in the system.3 For an Odesa container, Georgia is a transit country between the Azerbaijani border and the port of Batumi.
What Anxin does: We ask the Georgian broker who provides the transit guarantee from the border to Batumi and include it in the plan.
On 5 October 2026 Ukrinform reported a massive Russian attack on industrial and port infrastructure in the Odesa region, and an attack on a Liberian-flagged cargo vessel in one of the region's ports that killed a crew member.4 Cargo on a ferry into Chornomorsk carries that risk until it leaves the port area.
What Anxin does: We ask the consignee for its war-risk cover and an agreed inland delivery point before booking the ferry.
Ukraine closed the Transnistrian, central section of its Moldovan border along with the Russian and Belarusian borders in February 2022.5 The UZ Cargo Poland service sheet lists Odesa among the Liski terminals served by rail from Polish terminals,6 and road crossings from Romania and southern Moldova such as Orlivka–Isaccea and Reni–Giurgiulești are in the eCherha queue system.7
What Anxin does: If the ferry is not available we quote Odesa as a rail route through Poland, case by case, rather than leaving the enquiry unanswered.
Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer, the operators and the consignee. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Backlog at Aktau or on Azerbaijani rail | Kazakhstan / Azerbaijan | Current backlog checked per operator | Operator |
| Ferry not sailing or refusing class 9 | Batumi – Chornomorsk | Written acceptance; Poland rail fallback | Ferry operator / Anxin |
| Attack on the port area | Odesa region | War-risk cover; inland delivery point | Consignee / insurer |
| Georgian transit not covered | Georgia | Broker confirms the transit guarantee | Georgian broker |
By sea instead
Sea freight leaves from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lianyungang. See all sea routes from China. The sea route pages also cover Shenzhen to Ukraine.
Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.

We check operator and country acceptance for Urumqi → Odesa before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
