Wuhan to Kyiv
Wuhan · Alashankou · Brest · Medyka · Kyiv
The first container train from Wuhan to Kyiv ran in 2020, and the Yantai train that year went through Mongolia and Russia.1 Today the Ukrainian crossings with Russia and Belarus are closed, so a Kyiv container rides a China–Europe train to Małaszewicze in Poland and comes back east on Ukrainian broad gauge.
Five points for the Wuhan–Kyiv lane follow. Lithium batteries are screened case by case and depend on every railway in the chain, on Polish and Ukrainian acceptance and on the insurance position.
What we need to start
Route profile
Wuhan trains such as the X8015 leave from Wujiashan station and exit China at Alashankou for Małaszewicze.2
Across Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus to Poland, then by Polish and Ukrainian rail to the Liski terminal in Kyiv.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Chinese origin station to the border, through the transit countries and to the consignee.
Ukraine closed every checkpoint on its borders with Russia and Belarus from 00:00 on 28 February 2022.3 A Kyiv container therefore crosses the Belarusian–Polish border at Brest and Małaszewicze, enters the EU and only then turns towards Ukraine. Consolidated cargo from China to Ukraine commonly arrives at Małaszewicze and is broken down at a customs warehouse in Pruszków near Warsaw before trucks take it on.4
What Anxin does: We plan the Kyiv lane as two bookings, China to Poland and Poland to Ukraine, each with its own acceptance of class 9 cargo.
Poland shut its border with Belarus on 12 September 2025, and POLITICO wrote that the closure hit the route carrying about 90% of China–EU rail freight.5 Yicai Global reported more than 130 Chinese freight trains stranded at Brest after the reopening.6 A container for Kyiv waits in that queue like any other.
What Anxin does: We ask the operator for a holding place on the Belarusian side and keep the consignee informed if the border status changes.
The container leaves 1,435 mm track at Alashankou, travels on 1,520 mm through Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus, returns to 1,435 mm at Małaszewicze and goes back to 1,520 mm for Ukraine. UZ Cargo Poland's service sheet does that last transfer at Sławków or Medyka, onto wagons owned by the Liski terminal company, with an SMGS consignment note for the Ukrainian leg.7
What Anxin does: We ask which Polish terminal will make the transfer and check that its operator accepts lithium batteries before the train leaves China.
The same service sheet includes a one-time opening of a T1 transit document only for goods whose invoice value in one container does not exceed EUR 50,000; above that, terms are agreed separately, and customs inspections and additional security are excluded.7 A container of lithium batteries can pass that value quickly.
What Anxin does: We ask for the invoice value of each container at the enquiry stage so the transit arrangement through Poland is agreed before booking.
Ukrzaliznytsia told bondholders that Russian attacks damaged 209 locomotives, 371 freight cars, 86 bridges and 50 stations in 2025 and the first quarter of 2026, restricting freight transport across Ukraine.8 The Polish service sheet lists cargo insurance as excluded, so it has to be arranged separately.7
What Anxin does: We ask the consignee for its insurance arrangement and a fallback delivery point before the container crosses into Ukraine.
Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer, the operators and the consignee. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train held at Brest | Belarus–Poland border | Holding place named; status checked | Operator |
| Transit value above the included limit | Poland | Invoice value checked; transit agreed | Forwarder / broker |
| Rail damage in Ukraine | Ukrainian network | Insurance and fallback delivery point | Consignee / insurer |
| Transfer terminal refuses class 9 | Medyka / Sławków | Acceptance confirmed before departure | Operator |
By sea instead
Sea freight leaves from Shenzhen, Shanghai, Ningbo, Qingdao, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian and Lianyungang. See all sea routes from China. The sea route pages also cover Shenzhen to Ukraine.
Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.
