Uzbekistan has no border with China, so every load crosses at least one other country and one more customs frontier before reaching Tashkent. The second frontier, at Saryagash, was closed to all cargo for three days in 2025.

At a glance

Uzbekistan: three facts that shape the lane

Frontier

Saryagash was closed to all cargo for three days in 2025

Kazakhstan Railways stopped carriage to Uzbek stations via Saryagash from 22 to 24 November 2025 because more than 8,800 railcars had piled up.1

Capacity

The Saryagash border station was expanded

A 2024 container train from Xi'an to Tashkent was transshipped at Khorgos Gateway and ran via Almaty and Saryagash; Saryagash capacity was reported increased by 50% in reconstruction.2

Road rules

ADR since January 2020

Uzbekistan acceded to ADR on 24 January 2020,3 so trucks collecting a class 9 load at a rail terminal follow the European road agreement.

The corridor

Two borders, two sets of operators

The Uzbek railway chief suggested in November 2025 that the China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway could finish earlier than the 2030 target,4 but until it opens the rail route from China runs through Kazakhstan and the Khorgos–Saryagash axis. The Uzbek side is a separate customs system with its own broker, so documents prepared for Kazakhstan are checked again.

Acceptance of lithium batteries is screened case by case, subject to operator and country acceptance. We do not quote fixed times for this corridor, and the plan names a holding place in case the Saryagash border is shut again.

Choosing a mode

Each mode accepts lithium batteries on its own terms

Rail, road and sea operators apply different acceptance rules, and a shipment that is refused on one mode can sometimes be planned on another. We screen the cargo first and name the mode afterwards.
