Lithium batteries for Wismar go out of Dalian, the north-east's gateway on the Yellow Sea. On the way they face a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic, and they arrive at the port of Wismar.

Germany expects the battery to be registered, labelled and pre-declared before it is loaded in China. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Dalian Dayaowan export
  • Winter ice & spring fog
  • Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE
  • German-language safety information
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

The Dalian → Wismar route in brief

Origin port

Dalian (Dayaowan)

North-east China's battery gateway at Dayaowan, with a small but growing lithium export flow, a local MSA that has named misdeclaration as its main problem, and both winter ice and spring fog.

Import country

Germany

EU Battery Regulation labelling and QR-code dates, stiftung ear registration under the BattDG, and an ICS2 entry summary that must exist before the box is loaded.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Dalian and Wismar: 5 points

They run from the Dalian terminal through the voyage to Wismar and the Germany import file.

  1. Origin port

Spring fog season from April to July

The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, with the season mainly from April to July, seriously affecting sea transport. Fog holds keep vessels at anchor, and a late vessel can push the box past its documented sailing.

What Anxin does: In the fog season we avoid tight stuffing-to-cut-off gaps and keep the filing data ready to amend if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

Through the Danish straits, possibly on a feeder

Cargo for Wismar has to pass the Danish straits. IMO recommends pilots on Route T for ships of 11 m draught or more, and the Danish Maritime Authority reports ships that ignore the recommendation to their flag state. Whether the box stays on one vessel or is transhipped onto a feeder at a North Sea port, each vessel has to accept the UN numbers.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and the feeder operator on the booking and confirm DG acceptance for that leg as well as the mainline.

  3. Import country

Label, QR code and passport dates under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

The Battery Regulation phases in the information a battery must carry. The general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label-format implementing act, if that comes later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027. For EV, light-means-of-transport and industrial batteries above 2 kWh, that QR code must open a battery passport. Where the battery is too small, the label goes on the packaging and documents instead. Stock that leaves Dalian without these elements cannot simply be relabelled on the quay in Wismar.

What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Germany importer to confirm which battery category the goods fall into and that label, QR code and passport data are settled. We check carton and label photos against that answer; we do not certify conformity.

  4. Import country

    German-language instructions and safety information

The importer must make sure each battery travels with instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in the Member State easily understand, as that Member State determines. For consumer goods going to Germany, the practical reading is German-language safety text, and it has to be in the carton when the goods are placed on the market.

What Anxin does: When we review packing photos we note whether the inserts or labels show the required language, and we raise gaps with the shipper before stuffing rather than after arrival.

  5. Import country

Due diligence on battery raw materials from August 2027

Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 pushed the Battery Regulation's due diligence duties for cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite back to 18 August 2027 and gave the Commission until 26 July 2026 for its guidelines. Buyers in Germany are already collecting the supply-chain information they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Germany buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Dalian to Wismar

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Dalian, before the box is loaded

  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)

For the shipping line

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into Germany

  • Battery Regulation label / QR-code status, and battery passport where the battery is EV, LMT or industrial above 2 kWh
  • Producer / authorised representative for Germany and the Batt-Reg.-Nr. DE for each brand and battery category
  • Confirmation that the battery category's OfH participation is in place (BattDG)

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Dalian export filings, the carrier booking and the Germany import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Dalian → Wismar: questions we are asked

ADR, which the EU applies to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E).

Often, but it depends on the service. The Baltic is reached through the Danish straits, and we ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and confirm DG acceptance for each vessel.

Sea ice forms every winter in the northern Yellow Sea; in 2021/22 it was forecast to reach about 15 nautical miles out there, peaking mid-January to mid-February. We plan extra time for those weeks.
