Lithium batteries for Nazaré go through Dayaowan, where Liaoning's first JT/T 1543 lithium export sailed in May 2025. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Nazaré.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Dalian to Nazaré

Listed from loading in Dalian to import into Portugal, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    A smaller flow under the new ship-carriage standard

    Liaoning's first lithium battery export under JT/T 1543 sailed from Dayaowan on 4 May 2025, and Dalian MSA counted 885 TEU of lithium batteries exported in the first four months of that year. Carriers should not accept batteries that do not meet JT/T 1543, and with a thinner flow there are fewer sailings to fall back on if a booking is refused.

    What Anxin does: We check JT/T 1543 conformity evidence with the manufacturer before booking and confirm the carrier's acceptance of the UN numbers in writing.

  2. Origin port

    Ice in the northern Yellow Sea from January

    Sea ice forms every winter in the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea. In winter 2021/22 China's marine forecast centre expected floating ice about 15 nautical miles out in the northern Yellow Sea, where Dalian's Dayaowan lies, and about 60 in Liaodong Bay, peaking from mid-January to mid-February.

    What Anxin does: For January–February sailings from Dalian we allow extra time between stuffing and the DG cut-off and reconfirm the vessel schedule the week before loading.

  3. Sea corridor

    Mediterranean services are back in the Red Sea more than others

    Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 show 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services routed via the Red Sea, against 27% for North Europe. For Nazaré the Suez routing is therefore the likely one, and it runs through Bab el-Mandeb, which the JMIC rated SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026: the Houthis describe their blockade as selective, and they now hold Perim Island in the channel.

    What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Nazaré uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  4. Import country

    Annex V testing for stationary energy storage

    Stationary battery energy storage systems placed on the EU market since 18 August 2024 must be safe in normal operation, with technical documentation showing tests against the Annex V parameters, including thermal shock, short-circuit protection, over-discharge and thermal propagation. ESS buyers in Portugal increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

    What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Portugal we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

  5. Import country

    Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

    The Battery Regulation's general information label applies from 18 August 2026 (or 18 months after the label implementing act, if later), and every battery needs a QR code from 18 February 2027, linked to a battery passport for EV, LMT and industrial batteries above 2 kWh. Where the battery is too small, both go on the packaging and accompanying documents.

    What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Portugal importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  6. Import country

    Supply-chain due diligence moved to August 2027

    The Battery Regulation's due diligence obligations on cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite were postponed by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 and now apply from 18 August 2027, with Commission guidelines due by 26 July 2026. Buyers in Portugal are already asking suppliers for the supply-chain data they will need.

    What Anxin does: We pass the Portugal buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.
