This route runs from Liaoning through Dalian's Dayaowan terminals, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is the port of Plymouth.

British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Dalian Dayaowan export
  • Winter ice & spring fog
  • BPRN
  • S&S GB entry summary
  • English-language safety information

Route profile

How Dalian → Plymouth differs from other lanes

Origin port

Dalian (Dayaowan)

North-east China's battery gateway at Dayaowan, with a small but growing lithium export flow, a local MSA that has named misdeclaration as its main problem, and both winter ice and spring fog.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Dalian → Plymouth route

They run from the Dalian terminal through the voyage to Plymouth and the United Kingdom import file.

  1. Origin port

Spring fog season from April to July

The China Meteorological Administration describes sea fog as a major marine hazard in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, with the season mainly from April to July, seriously affecting sea transport. Fog holds keep vessels at anchor, and a late vessel can push the box past its documented sailing.

What Anxin does: In the fog season we avoid tight stuffing-to-cut-off gaps and keep the filing data ready to amend if the vessel changes.

  2. Origin port

Ice in the northern Yellow Sea from January

Sea ice forms every winter in the Bohai Sea and northern Yellow Sea. In winter 2021/22 China's marine forecast centre expected floating ice about 15 nautical miles out in the northern Yellow Sea, where Dalian's Dayaowan lies, and about 60 in Liaodong Bay, peaking from mid-January to mid-February.

What Anxin does: For January–February sailings from Dalian we allow extra time between stuffing and the DG cut-off and reconfirm the vessel schedule the week before loading.

  3. Sea corridor

Cape waters saw about a third of 2024's container losses

Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  4. Import country

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading in Dalian

Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.

What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Dalian cut-off.

  5. Import country

Tonnage and chemistry reporting through the NPWD

UK battery producers register with the environmental regulator through the National Packaging Waste Database and report every year the tonnage and chemistry of the batteries they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers supplying more than 32 kg a year also have to offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.

What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.

  6. Import country

Road haulage from Plymouth under the carriage regulations

Once the box is off the quay at Plymouth, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.

What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Plymouth matches what left Dalian.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Dalian → Plymouth

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

Before loading in Dalian

  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Crossed-out bin symbol and mAh/Ah capacity label checked on battery and packaging photos

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)
  • Bill-of-lading issuer named and S&S GB data complete before loading

For the importer in United Kingdom

  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR
  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Dalian filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Plymouth.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Dalian → Plymouth: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is responsible, and a booking made within 24 hours of loading goes on a later vessel.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Sea ice forms every winter in the northern Yellow Sea; in 2021/22 it was forecast to reach about 15 nautical miles out there, peaking mid-January to mid-February. We plan extra time for those weeks.
