Lithium batteries for Volos go from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Volos.

The Greek side adds EMPA registration to the EU battery rules. This page sets out 6 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Nansha export
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • EMPA registration
  • Greek-language safety information

Route profile

What sets Guangzhou → Volos apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

6 pain points from Guangzhou to Volos

Listed from loading in Guangzhou to import into Greece, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

Packaging certificate data now shared in Dongguan

Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA began sharing dangerous-goods packaging certificate data in September 2026, which they called a first in China, and agreed joint action on concealed and false declarations; Huangpu Customs runs a joint 'lithium batteries going overseas' service against misdeclaration as well. A mismatch between packaging certificate and MSA filing is visible to both.

What Anxin does: We check that the UN number, packaging code and quantities on the packaging certificate are exactly those on the MSA cargo report before either is submitted.

  2. Origin port

A recommended 25% charge for ESS from Nansha

Nansha MSA told a July 2024 meeting on energy-storage carriage that ESS batteries should travel at roughly 25% state of charge, with accidental activation prevented. It is advice, not a binding rule, yet it is the number the local authority has put on the record.

What Anxin does: For ESS cargo leaving Nansha we ask the manufacturer to state the shipping state of charge and the anti-activation measures in writing, and put both in the documents the carrier sees.

  3. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Volos

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Volos most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Volos uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  4. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Greece has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Volos.

What Anxin does: We pass the Greece importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  5. Import country

Safety information in a language Greece accepts

An importer has to ensure that batteries are accompanied by instructions and safety information in a language that end-users in Greece can easily understand, as the Member State determines. Inserts and carton print are much simpler to adjust before packing in China.

What Anxin does: We ask the importer which language Greece requires and check carton and insert photos against it before loading.

  6. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Greece for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Greece we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Guangzhou filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for Greece before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Volos.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Guangzhou to Volos

The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
