Lithium batteries for Vlissingen go from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha. On the way they face a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and they arrive at the port of Vlissingen.
The Netherlands is still building its national battery register, so proof of registration runs through the collective schemes. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.
A battery register still waiting for Rijkswaterstaat, no collective scheme yet for industrial batteries, a 24-hour dangerous-goods report to the port, and the EU-wide CE and label duties.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Guangzhou terminal through the voyage to Vlissingen and the Netherlands import file.
At a July 2024 meeting on energy-storage carriage, Nansha MSA recommended shipping ESS batteries at a state of charge of around 25% and preventing accidental activation. It is a recommendation rather than a fixed rule, but it is the figure the local authority has put on record.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo leaving Nansha we ask the manufacturer to state the shipping state of charge and the anti-activation measures in writing, and put both in the documents the carrier sees.
The map on this page shows the corridor through Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez, but Sea-Intelligence figures for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%, with 27% for North Europe services and 57% for the Mediterranean. The service that calls at Vlissingen decides between Suez and the Cape of Good Hope, and with it the distance, the waters and the possible transhipment ports.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
No producer organisation covers industrial batteries in the Netherlands yet. Since 18 August 2025 their producers must apply for approval individually, and Stichting OPEN warns that the applicant can end up responsible for collecting all industrial batteries, not only its own.
What Anxin does: For storage systems and industrial packs we flag this to the Dutch importer before quoting, because the approval question sits with the importer, not the carrier.
Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Netherlands: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.
What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Netherlands importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.
A battery entering Netherlands has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Vlissingen.
What Anxin does: We pass the Netherlands importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Guangzhou export filings, the carrier booking and the Netherlands import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Stock shipped without the label due from August 2026 | Importer in Netherlands | Label status confirmed before booking | Manufacturer / importer |
| Importer details missing from battery and packaging | Importer in Netherlands | Address block sent to the factory before packing | Manufacturer / importer |
Questions
At least 24 hours before the vessel arrives, or before it leaves the previous port if the voyage is shorter. The port authority then decides where the ship may berth and discharge.
Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports are in the EU Emissions Trading System, covering 50% of the emissions of a voyage from outside the EU. Lines must surrender allowances for 70% of 2025 emissions and 100% from 2027, and may pass the cost on as a surcharge.
Nansha MSA has recommended around 25% for ESS batteries and measures against accidental activation. Treat it as the local authority's recommendation; the carrier's own acceptance conditions also apply.
