From Guangzhou to Nazaré, cargo moves from the Pearl River Delta via Nansha, crosses a Suez corridor that Mediterranean services are using again more than any other Asia–Europe lane, and is discharged at the port of Nazaré.

On the Portuguese side, APA's SILiAmb register and the EU importer checks both apply. Below are 6 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Nansha export
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • SILiAmb / APA registration

Route profile

The Guangzhou → Nazaré route in brief

Origin port

Guangzhou (Nansha)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo through Nansha, where a September 2026 agreement lets Dongguan-inspected containers load without a second MSA check, and where typhoon season runs June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Guangzhou and Nazaré: 6 points

They run from the Guangzhou terminal through the voyage to Nazaré and the Portugal import file.

  1. Origin port

Dongguan factory to Nansha: the new one-box route

On 22 September 2026 Dongguan and Guangzhou MSA agreed to extend the one-box model to Nansha: Guangzhou MSA recognises Dongguan MSA's factory inspection and does not re-inspect unless necessary. The first box was stuffed in Dongguan that day and sailed from Nansha to Singapore on 24 September. The model is new at Nansha, so the factory record has to be right first time.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your Dongguan factory can use the Nansha one-box arrangement and make sure the stuffing photos, packing certificate and DG declaration match, because a mismatch is the 'necessary' case that brings the second inspection back.

  2. Origin port

Typhoon weeks at the Pearl River mouth

The Hong Kong Observatory puts the region's tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. Nansha sits at the mouth of the Pearl River; a closed gate or a changed vessel means the DG filings and the packing certificate have to follow the box to a new sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Nansha and refile quickly if the vessel changes.

  3. Sea corridor

EU emissions trading now covers the whole inbound voyage share

Ships of 5,000 GT and above calling at EU ports, Nazaré included, are in the EU Emissions Trading System: 50% of the emissions of a voyage from China are covered, and the share of emissions for which lines must surrender allowances rises from 70% (for 2025 emissions) to 100% from 2027. Carriers can pass that cost on as a surcharge.

What Anxin does: We ask for the emissions surcharge to be shown as its own line in the quote, with the basis the carrier uses, so that successive quotes can be compared like for like.

  4. Import country

APA's SILiAmb register and an annual declaration

Importers placing batteries on the market in Portugal register with the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) on SILiAmb and submit an annual declaration by 31 March that includes batteries built into other products. They meet their responsibility through a licensed management entity such as Electrão, or through an individual system authorised by APA.

What Anxin does: We ask the Portuguese importer for its APA registration and management entity before booking, and list battery weights separately so its declaration is easy.

  5. Import country

The importer's name and address on the battery

A battery entering Portugal has to identify its importer: name, registered trade name or trade mark, postal address and a contact point belong on the battery itself, or on the packaging or accompanying document when the battery is too small. That text is fixed at the factory, not at Nazaré.

What Anxin does: We pass the Portugal importer's name and address block to the manufacturer before the goods are packed in China and check carton or battery photos for it before loading.

  6. Import country

The truck leg out of Nazaré runs under ADR

Road delivery from Nazaré is an ADR movement, because the EU applies ADR to domestic journeys through Directive 2008/68/EC. For UN 3480 that means class 9, transport category 2 and tunnel code (E), which restricts the route through category E tunnels; batteries found damaged at unloading move to special provision 376 packing (P908 or P911).

What Anxin does: We give the Portugal haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Guangzhou.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Guangzhou → Nazaré

These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Guangzhou end

  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • EU declaration of conformity and CE marking photo from the manufacturer
  • Importer name, trade name and postal address printed on battery or packaging

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Red Sea or Cape) and any war-risk surcharge stated on the booking
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

At the Portugal end

  • APA (SILiAmb) registration and management entity of the Portuguese producer
  • Instructions and safety information in the language Portugal requires
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Guangzhou export filings, the carrier booking and the Portugal import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Guangzhou → Nazaré route

The CE marking on the battery and the manufacturer's EU declaration of conformity, which must be available in the language Portugal requires. Both have applied since 18 August 2024.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Both now have a one-box arrangement with Dongguan MSA: Yantian since May 2026 and Nansha since 22 September 2026, so a container inspected at the factory need not be reopened at the terminal unless necessary. The choice then comes down to the carrier's service to your destination and the cut-offs; we compare both when you book.
