Ningbo to Swansea
East China Sea · Taiwan Strait · Malacca Strait · Indian Ocean · Bab-el-Mandeb · Suez Canal · Strait of Gibraltar · St George's Channel
This route runs through Ningbo's Beilun or Meishan terminals under Zhejiang MSA's 2026 battery guide, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Swansea.
British importers report battery tonnage and chemistry each year and need a CDS subscription for customs. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.
An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading, UK battery producer registration with a BPRN, and 24-hour dangerous goods notice to the harbour master.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Ningbo terminal through the voyage to Swansea and the United Kingdom import file.
Zhejiang MSA runs a 'one-document' rule for battery water-to-water transhipment: if the cargo report is made at the port of loading, only a ship report is needed at the transhipment port. Cargo barged into Ningbo can therefore avoid a second cargo report, provided the first one was filed correctly.
What Anxin does: When cargo starts on a feeder or barge, we make sure the cargo report is filed at the first port of loading and carries the ocean routing, so no second cargo report is needed at Ningbo.
Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
Once the box is off the quay at Swansea, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Swansea matches what left Ningbo.
Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.
What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Ningbo cut-off.
Every import into the UK is declared in HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or its agent needs an EORI number starting with GB (XI in Northern Ireland) and a CDS subscription, which HMRC grants within 2 hours or up to 5 working days if it runs more checks, so a first-time importer should subscribe well before the ship reaches Swansea.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

Documents & compliance
Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Ningbo filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Swansea.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Entry summary not lodged and the box rolls | Loading port, Ningbo | Filer and data settled at booking | Bill-of-lading issuer |
| Importer not yet subscribed to CDS when the ship arrives | Customs at Swansea | EORI and CDS status confirmed at booking | Importer / customs agent |
Questions
The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol at a minimum size, on the packaging if the battery is too small, and for portable rechargeables a capacity in mAh or Ah on the battery and the packaging front.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Zhejiang MSA's 2026 guide says the cargo weight in any half of the container's length should not exceed 60% of the total, with every package braced and checked for damage and marks.
