This route runs out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Holyhead.
The UK side asks for an S&S GB declaration, a battery producer registration and harbour notice. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult
In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Holyhead and at customs in United Kingdom.
Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot has since November 2024 covered water-to-water transhipment of lithium batteries and other 'new three' cargo between Dagang and Qianwan, with one outbound cargo report and no more than one packing inspection within the pilot ports. In the launch case, three cargo and three ship reports became one cargo and two ship reports.
What Anxin does: If your cargo is stuffed at a Dagang yard or reaches Qianwan by water, we check at booking whether it qualifies for the pilot and file once, so the box is not reopened between terminals.
ESS units loading at Qingdao fall under a Shandong MSA waterway safe-transport guide written for lithium battery energy storage systems at the province's coastal ports, so preparation should follow that guide alongside the IMDG Code.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Holyhead decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
UK rules require appliances with built-in batteries to be designed so that the end user can readily remove the battery, or, where that is not possible, an independent qualified professional can, with instructions naming the battery type. The design question sits with the manufacturer, long before the goods reach Holyhead.
What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for the UK we remind the importer of the removability rule so the manufacturer can answer it before shipment; we do not assess compliance.
The UK's S&S GB service must hold the entry summary for a Holyhead container 24 hours before it is loaded in Qingdao. Whoever issued the bill of lading answers for it, and a late booking rolls to a later vessel rather than being loaded unfiled.
What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Qingdao cut-off.
Import clearance at Holyhead runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service; CHIEF is no longer an option. A GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription are prerequisites, and subscription can take up to 5 working days when HMRC makes extra checks.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

Documents & compliance
Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Qingdao filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Holyhead.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duplicate filing or reopening between Qingdao terminals | Dagang → Qianwan | Pilot eligibility checked at booking; single cargo report | Anxin with the declarant |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Entry summary not lodged and the box rolls | Loading port, Qingdao | Filer and data settled at booking | Bill-of-lading issuer |
| Importer not yet subscribed to CDS when the ship arrives | Customs at Holyhead | EORI and CDS status confirmed at booking | Importer / customs agent |
Questions
HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or agent needs a GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription; HMRC grants access within 2 hours or up to 5 working days.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Under Qingdao MSA's 'one-document, one-box' pilot (since November 2024), water-to-water transhipment between Dagang and Qianwan needs one outbound cargo report and at most one packing inspection. We confirm eligibility at booking.

We check carrier acceptance for Qingdao → Holyhead before any booking, and ask for missing battery documents first.
