Lithium batteries for Orkney go from Shandong through Qingdao's Qianwan terminals, where Qingdao MSA pilots one-document transhipment. On the way they face a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and they arrive at the port of Orkney.
On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult
They run from the Qingdao terminal through the voyage to Orkney and the United Kingdom import file.
The China Meteorological Administration lists sea fog among the major marine hazards of the Yellow and Bohai Seas, mostly between April and July and with a serious effect on shipping. At Qingdao a fog hold can shift a battery container onto another vessel, and its DG filings must follow.
What Anxin does: In fog season we leave slack between stuffing and the DG cut-off at Qianwan and keep the cargo report ready to amend quickly if the vessel changes.
The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Orkney decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.
What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.
Once the box is off the quay at Orkney, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Orkney matches what left Qingdao.
Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.
What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.
Every import into the UK is declared in HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or its agent needs an EORI number starting with GB (XI in Northern Ireland) and a CDS subscription, which HMRC grants within 2 hours or up to 5 working days if it runs more checks, so a first-time importer should subscribe well before the ship reaches Orkney.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Qingdao export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fog hold forces a vessel change after filing | Qingdao, Apr–Jul | Slack in schedule; amendment-ready filing | Anxin with the declarant |
| Service switches between Suez and Cape routing | Main voyage | Routing written on the booking; quotes kept separate per routing; packing assumes the longer voyage | Carrier, tracked by Anxin |
| Annual tonnage return missing shipments | UK producer | Weight and chemistry recorded per shipment | Importer / producer |
| Importer not yet subscribed to CDS when the ship arrives | Customs at Orkney | EORI and CDS status confirmed at booking | Importer / customs agent |
Questions
At least 24 hours before the container is loaded at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is responsible, and a booking made within 24 hours of loading goes on a later vessel.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
