This route runs out of Qingdao on the Yellow Sea, where April to July is fog season, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Portsmouth.
On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.
What we need to start
Route profile
Qianwan exports from Shandong, where Qingdao MSA's one-document pilot cuts repeat filings for cargo moved between terminals by water.
The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult
Listed from loading in Qingdao to import into United Kingdom, each with what we do about it.
Shandong MSA has issued a waterway safe-transport guide specifically for lithium battery energy storage systems at Shandong coastal ports, so ESS units shipped from Qingdao should be prepared with that provincial guide in mind as well as the IMDG Code.
What Anxin does: For ESS cargo we review the unit's packing and securing plan against the Shandong guide with the packing site before booking.
Round-Africa routing puts battery containers through South African waters. Of the 576 containers the World Shipping Council recorded as lost at sea in 2024, the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates about 200, roughly 35%, went overboard near the Cape. In August 2024 alone, SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in wintry weather.
What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.
Under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, dangerous goods may not enter a British harbour area unless the harbour master has had notice at least 24 hours (and at most six months) in advance, or has agreed a shorter period. UN numbers, names and quantities are part of that notice, so the vessel's report is only as good as the booking data.
What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.
Once the box is off the quay at Portsmouth, the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009 apply: regulation 5 requires road carriage of dangerous goods in Great Britain to comply with ADR, subject to GB derogations. For UN 3480 that means class 9 documentation, marked packages and a haulier set up for ADR loads.
What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Portsmouth matches what left Qingdao.
Import clearance at Portsmouth runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service; CHIEF is no longer an option. A GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription are prerequisites, and subscription can take up to 5 working days when HMRC makes extra checks.
What Anxin does: At booking we ask for the UK importer's EORI number and who will lodge the CDS declaration, and pass the commercial invoice, packing list and dangerous goods details to that agent before arrival.

Documents & compliance
These documents come from the shipper, the manufacturer and the importer. Anxin checks them against each other; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Qingdao filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Portsmouth.
Carriers we book with
Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.
Risk & mitigation
| Risk | Where | Mitigation | Who acts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy weather off South Africa | Cape of Good Hope | CINS stuffing and blocking checks before sealing | Packing site, checked by Anxin |
| Harbour notice late or wrong | Portsmouth harbour area | DG data frozen before departure | Carrier / agent |
| Importer not yet subscribed to CDS when the ship arrives | Customs at Portsmouth | EORI and CDS status confirmed at booking | Importer / customs agent |
Questions
Yes. As producer it registers with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, and shows its BPRN on invoices to business customers.
It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.
Mainly April to July, according to the China Meteorological Administration, which calls sea fog a major hazard for Yellow Sea transport.
