This route runs from the Yangtze River Delta via Shanghai's Yangshan and Waigaoqiao terminals, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Orkney.

Great Britain runs its own post-Brexit pre-filing and battery producer rules. Below are 5 route-specific points to plan for, what we do about each, and the documents to have ready before booking.

What we need to start

  • Yangshan / Waigaoqiao export
  • Photo-verified packing certificate
  • English-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

What sets Shanghai → Orkney apart

Origin port

Shanghai (Yangshan / Waigaoqiao)

Yangshan and Waigaoqiao exports under Shanghai MSA's photo-verified packing system, where a mismatch between photos and EDI data keeps a DG box off the ship.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Shanghai and Orkney: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Orkney and the United Kingdom market.

  1. Origin port

Shanghai checks during and after the voyage filing, not just before

Shanghai MSA's Notice No. 4 of 2024 accepts either an inspector-signed packing certificate or a packing declaration from the stuffing company, but places the burden on the shipper: the batteries must meet the UN tests and be protected against damage, short circuit and accidental activation, and MSA runs spot checks during and after the process, with proof to be produced on request.

What Anxin does: We keep a file per container (UN38.3 summary, SDS, packing photos, terminal protection details) so that proof can be produced the same day if Shanghai MSA asks for it after sailing.

  2. Sea corridor

Drawn via Suez, sailed mostly via the Cape

The map on this page shows the corridor through Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez, but Sea-Intelligence figures for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%, with 27% for North Europe services and 57% for the Mediterranean. The service that calls at Orkney decides between Suez and the Cape of Good Hope, and with it the distance, the waters and the possible transhipment ports.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Import country

Industrial battery producers register within 28 days and put the BPRN on paperwork

In the UK the importer is usually the battery producer. Industrial and vehicle battery producers register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards on the NPWD within 28 days of first placing batteries on the market, report tonnage, chemistry and brand by 31 March, and must take waste industrial batteries back from end-users free of charge. Their BPRN goes on invoices and delivery notes to business customers.

What Anxin does: For storage and industrial packs we ask the UK importer for its BPRN before booking and add it to the documents we prepare.

  4. Import country

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading in Shanghai

The UK's S&S GB service must hold the entry summary for a Orkney container 24 hours before it is loaded in Shanghai. Whoever issued the bill of lading answers for it, and a late booking rolls to a later vessel rather than being loaded unfiled.

What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Shanghai cut-off.

  5. Import country

Compliance scheme deadline for portable batteries

More than a tonne of portable batteries a year puts a UK producer into a battery compliance scheme, which it must join by 15 October ahead of the compliance year and which then registers and reports on its behalf. Below that threshold the producer registers directly on the NPWD and reports tonnage and chemistry by 31 January.

What Anxin does: We ask the UK importer whether it is a large or small portable producer and which scheme covers it, and put battery weights per chemistry on the packing list.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Shanghai to Orkney

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Shanghai end

  • Per-container evidence file (UN38.3 summary, SDS, photos, short-circuit protection) kept for Shanghai MSA spot checks
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

At the United Kingdom end

  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery weight and chemistry per shipment for the importer's NPWD return
  • Importer's GB or XI EORI and CDS subscription confirmed; declarant named

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Shanghai filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Shanghai to Orkney

At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Shanghai MSA's Notice No. 4 of 2024 accepts either an inspector-signed packing certificate or a packing declaration issued by the stuffing company. Either way, the shipper remains responsible and must provide proof if MSA spot-checks.
