This route runs through Yangshan or Waigaoqiao under Shanghai MSA's photo-verified packing rules, then follows a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service; at the far end is the port of Peterhead.

Great Britain runs its own post-Brexit pre-filing and battery producer rules. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Yangshan / Waigaoqiao export
  • Photo-verified packing certificate
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • BPRN
  • S&S GB entry summary

Route profile

How Shanghai → Peterhead differs from other lanes

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Import country

United Kingdom

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading, UK battery producer registration with a BPRN, and 24-hour dangerous goods notice to the harbour master.

Where this route gets difficult

Where Shanghai → Peterhead shipments get held up: 5 points

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Peterhead and the United Kingdom market.

  1. Origin port

    Shanghai's photo-verified packing certificate

At Shanghai the packing inspector must upload photos taken before, during and after stuffing through the MSA's remote system, with face recognition and phone location on, before the electronic packing certificate goes out by EDI. A container is not loaded if the photos are missing, uploaded late, taken outside the verified stuffing site, or do not match the EDI cargo data. Stuffing sites outside Shanghai must be registered with Shanghai MSA.

What Anxin does: We confirm that the stuffing site (including factory sites in Jiangsu or Zhejiang) is registered for Shanghai's remote system, and we check the photo upload against the EDI data before the packing certificate is sent.

  2. Sea corridor

Drawn via Suez, sailed mostly via the Cape

The map on this page shows the corridor through Bab-el-Mandeb and Suez, but Sea-Intelligence figures for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%, with 27% for North Europe services and 57% for the Mediterranean. The service that calls at Peterhead decides between Suez and the Cape of Good Hope, and with it the distance, the waters and the possible transhipment ports.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Import country

Harbour master notice a day ahead under DGHAR

Under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, dangerous goods may not enter a British harbour area unless the harbour master has had notice at least 24 hours (and at most six months) in advance, or has agreed a shorter period. UN numbers, names and quantities are part of that notice, so the vessel's report is only as good as the booking data.

What Anxin does: We freeze the UN number, proper shipping name, package count and gross weight on the booking before departure and send any change to the carrier at once.

  4. Import country

Annual battery returns through the NPWD

Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.

What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead under UK rules

Batteries sold in the UK may contain no more than 0.0005 % mercury and 0.002 % cadmium by weight, subject to listed exceptions, and those above 0.004 % lead need the Pb symbol beneath the bin symbol. The Office for Product Safety and Standards enforces the rules.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for a substance statement covering mercury, cadmium and lead and file it with the shipment documents for the UK importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Shanghai → Peterhead

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

In Shanghai, before the box is loaded

  • Stuffing photos (before, during, after) uploaded to Shanghai MSA's remote system before the EDI packing certificate is sent
  • Stuffing site registered and geo-verified with Shanghai MSA; fire-safety proof for lithium DG warehouses
  • Container packing certificate signed by a certified packing inspector after supervised stuffing
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)

For the shipping line

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Lithium battery mark (SP188 cargo) or class 9 labels and placards
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)

For import into United Kingdom

  • Battery weight and chemistry per shipment for the importer's NPWD return
  • Importer's GB or XI EORI and CDS subscription confirmed; declarant named
  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Shanghai export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shanghai → Peterhead: questions we are asked

The crossed-out wheeled bin symbol at a minimum size, on the packaging if the battery is too small, and for portable rechargeables a capacity in mAh or Ah on the battery and the packaging front.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

It can, but Shanghai MSA checks the phone location of the packing photos against a verified stuffing site, and sites outside Shanghai must be registered with it. We confirm registration before the stuffing date; otherwise the container can be refused for loading.
