This route runs from Dongguan and Shenzhen factories via Yantian, where the one-box route had moved 409 battery containers by September 2026, then follows a long Europe voyage extended through the Danish straits into the Baltic; at the far end is the port of Vaasa.

Finland keeps its battery producers in a national register at the Finnish Supervisory Agency. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • Finnish producer register entry

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Vaasa apart

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – Baltic via the Danish straits

The Baltic is reached only through the Danish straits, where deep-draught ships are advised to take pilots, and its northern ports set ice-class restrictions every winter.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Shenzhen to Vaasa

They run from the Shenzhen terminal through the voyage to Vaasa and the Finland import file.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

The Danish straits and a possible feeder change

Every box for Vaasa passes the Danish straits, where IMO recommends pilotage on Route T for ships with a draught of 11 m or more and the Danish Maritime Authority reports non-compliant ships to their flag state. If the container is moved to a feeder at a North Sea port, that second vessel must also accept the UN numbers.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to name any transhipment port and the feeder operator on the booking and confirm DG acceptance for that leg as well as the mainline.

  3. Import country

Annex V testing for stationary energy storage

Stationary battery energy storage systems placed on the EU market since 18 August 2024 must be safe in normal operation, with technical documentation showing tests against the Annex V parameters, including thermal shock, short-circuit protection, over-discharge and thermal propagation. ESS buyers in Finland increasingly ask for that file before delivery.

What Anxin does: For ESS cabinets and racks bound for Finland we ask the manufacturer to confirm that the Annex V test documentation exists before booking and note the answer in the shipment file.

  4. Import country

Due diligence on battery raw materials from August 2027

Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 pushed the Battery Regulation's due diligence duties for cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite back to 18 August 2027 and gave the Commission until 26 July 2026 for its guidelines. Buyers in Finland are already collecting the supply-chain information they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Finland buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

  5. Import country

Built-in portable batteries must be user-replaceable from February 2027

From 18 February 2027, Article 11 requires portable batteries built into appliances to be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user with commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, apart from limited derogations. Appliances shipped to Finland for sale after that date need a design that meets the rule.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Finland we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Documents & compliance

Documents to line up for Shenzhen → Vaasa

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Shenzhen end

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Annex V safety documentation confirmed for stationary storage systems
  • Substance declaration covering mercury, cadmium and lead limits
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the shipping line

  • Transhipment port, feeder operator and feeder DG acceptance named on the booking
  • UN 38.3 test summary for every cell and battery type
  • Dangerous goods declaration with UN number (3480 / 3481 / 3090 / 3091), proper shipping name and packing instruction (P903, or P908/P911 for damaged)

For import into Finland

  • Finnish producer register entry (or authorised representative)
  • Label and QR-code status against the August 2026 and February 2027 dates

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Shenzhen export filings, the carrier booking and the Finland import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Questions about shipping from Shenzhen to Vaasa

The importer's: name, registered trade name or trade mark and postal address with a contact point, on the battery or, if it is too small, on the packaging or accompanying document.

Yes, but in the restriction period only ships of the required ice class and deadweight receive icebreaker assistance. Finland's agency publishes the restrictions on baltice.org, with exemption requests due at least three working days before arrival.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
