Lithium batteries for Viana do Castelo go from Dongguan and Shenzhen factories via Yantian, where the one-box route had moved 409 battery containers by September 2026. On the way they face a Bab el-Mandeb and Suez passage into the Mediterranean, and they arrive at the port of Viana do Castelo.

Portugal registers battery producers with APA on SILiAmb. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity
  • SILiAmb / APA registration

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Viana do Castelo apart

Sea corridor

Asia – Mediterranean via Suez

Mediterranean services are the ones most likely to use Suez again (57% in September 2026), which puts the cargo back through Bab el-Mandeb, rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat.

Import country

Portugal

An annual SILiAmb declaration, a licensed management entity or individual system, and EU importer duties from the declaration of conformity to the importer's address on the battery.

Where this route gets difficult

What to watch between Shenzhen and Viana do Castelo: 5 points

In the order the cargo meets them: at the loading port, at sea, at Viana do Castelo and at customs in Portugal.

  1. Origin port

    Typhoon season squeezes Shenzhen cut-offs

The Hong Kong Observatory puts the regional tropical cyclone season from June to October, busiest July to September. DG containers need their MSA filings approved and a signed packing certificate before loading, so a closed gate or a rolled vessel in typhoon weeks can push the whole document chain to a new sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez is the likelier routing for Viana do Castelo

Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Viana do Castelo most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Viana do Castelo uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

The ICS2 entry summary is due before loading in Shenzhen

For Viana do Castelo, EU security pre-filing happens at the other end of the voyage: the ICS2 entry summary must reach the system 24 hours before the container is loaded in Shenzhen. No filing means no loading, and a missing EORI number is enough to reject it.

What Anxin does: We collect the consignee's EORI number, an HS-level goods description and the house-bill parties at booking, and make sure the party filing the ENS has them before the Shenzhen cut-off.

  4. Import country

Supply-chain due diligence moved to August 2027

The Battery Regulation's due diligence obligations on cobalt, lithium, nickel and natural graphite were postponed by Regulation (EU) 2025/1561 and now apply from 18 August 2027, with Commission guidelines due by 26 July 2026. Buyers in Portugal are already asking suppliers for the supply-chain data they will need.

What Anxin does: We pass the Portugal buyer's due diligence questions to the manufacturer and keep their answers with the shipment file; the policy itself remains the producer's responsibility.

  5. Import country

User-replaceable batteries in appliances from 18 February 2027

Article 11 of the Battery Regulation says that from 18 February 2027 portable batteries inside appliances must be readily removable and replaceable by the end-user using commercially available tools, without heat or solvents, except under limited derogations. Appliances sold in Portugal after that date need a design that complies.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for Portugal we point the importer to the February 2027 date so the manufacturer answers the design question before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Send the file once, complete

Most delays on this route start with a document that exists but does not match: a UN number, a model name or a package count that differs between the Shenzhen filings, the carrier booking and the Portugal import file. We check the three against each other before the booking is confirmed.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shenzhen → Viana do Castelo: questions we are asked

24 hours before the container is loaded in China, not before it reaches Viana do Castelo. Without it carriers do not load the box, and a filing without an EORI number is rejected.

Often: in September 2026, 57% of Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea routing. Bab el-Mandeb was rated a SUBSTANTIAL threat by the JMIC on 24 September 2026, so we confirm each service's routing before booking.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
