Lithium batteries for Barry go from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou. On the way they face a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service, and they arrive at the port of Barry.

On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. The 5 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • English-language safety information
  • Consignee EORI
  • EU declaration of conformity

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Barry apart

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Shenzhen to Barry

Listed from loading in Shenzhen to import into United Kingdom, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    Cut-offs in Shenzhen's typhoon weeks

June to October is the regional tropical cyclone season according to the Hong Kong Observatory, peaking July to September. Because DG boxes need approved MSA filings and a signed packing certificate before loading, a gate closure or rolled vessel in those weeks can move the entire document chain to another sailing.

What Anxin does: From June to October we build slack into the stuffing date, confirm the DG cut-off with the carrier the week before loading, and resubmit filings promptly if the vessel changes.

  2. Sea corridor

    Container losses off South Africa

Routing round Africa takes battery boxes past the Cape. The World Shipping Council counted 576 containers lost at sea in 2024, and the South African Maritime Safety Authority estimates around 200 of them, about 35%, were lost near the Cape; in August 2024 SAMSA reported 99 boxes lost from the CMA CGM Belem off Richards Bay and 46 from the MSC Antonio off Port St Johns in winter weather.

What Anxin does: When the booking goes via the Cape, we apply the CINS stuffing checks (gaps, blocking, wall clearance) more strictly and ask for photos at every stage of packing.

  3. Import country

Annual battery returns through the NPWD

Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.

What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.

  4. Import country

Bin symbol and capacity label under the 2008 regulations

Great Britain still labels batteries under the Batteries and Accumulators (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2008: a crossed-out wheeled bin symbol of a set minimum size on every battery, moved to the packaging only when the battery is too small or cannot practically be marked, and a capacity in mAh or Ah on portable rechargeables and on the front of their packaging.

What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Shenzhen, because relabelling after discharge at Barry means opening dangerous goods packages.

  5. Import country

Batteries in appliances must be readily removable

UK rules require appliances with built-in batteries to be designed so that the end user can readily remove the battery, or, where that is not possible, an independent qualified professional can, with instructions naming the battery type. The design question sits with the manufacturer, long before the goods reach Barry.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for the UK we remind the importer of the removability rule so the manufacturer can answer it before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Barry.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Common questions on the Shenzhen → Barry route

HMRC's Customs Declaration Service. The importer or agent needs a GB (or XI) EORI number and a CDS subscription; HMRC grants access within 2 hours or up to 5 working days.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Yes, provided a certified packing inspector supervises the stuffing and signs the container packing certificate. Since May 2026 Yantian and Dongguan MSA have also piloted joint factory inspection so the container can be loaded at Yantian without reopening; we check whether your shipment can use it.
