This route runs from factories around the Pearl River Delta through Yantian or Shekou, then follows a lane whose routing, Suez or Cape of Good Hope, is decided service by service; at the far end is the port of Holyhead.

The UK side asks for an S&S GB declaration, a battery producer registration and harbour notice. The 6 points below are particular to this lane; each comes with what we do and the paperwork it touches.

What we need to start

  • Yantian / Shekou export
  • Typhoon season Jun–Oct
  • S&S GB entry summary
  • English-language safety information

Route profile

What sets Shenzhen → Holyhead apart

Origin port

Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou)

Pearl River Delta battery cargo, often stuffed at factories in Dongguan or Huizhou, exported through Yantian or Shekou, with a typhoon season from June to October.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

6 points to plan for on the Shenzhen → Holyhead route

They run from the Shenzhen terminal through the voyage to Holyhead and the United Kingdom import file.

  1. Origin port

Inspected in Dongguan, loaded unopened at Yantian

A large share of Shenzhen's battery exports is stuffed inland and trucked to the quay. In a May 2026 cross-regional 'one-box' pilot, Yantian MSA and Dongguan MSA jointly inspected four battery containers at a Dongguan factory and loaded them at Yantian without reopening them, which shows that the factory inspection record is what counts at the terminal.

What Anxin does: We ask at booking whether your factory and the terminal's MSA office can use the one-box arrangement, and we have stuffing photos, the packing certificate and the DG declaration match exactly, so the container is not held for re-inspection.

  2. Origin port

Dongguan's packaging certificate data is shared

Dongguan, home to more than 500 battery companies, supplies much of the cargo leaving Shenzhen. Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data, described as a first in China, and act jointly against concealed and false declarations; the one-box route to Yantian, 409 containers by then, relies on the same record.

What Anxin does: We compare the packaging certificate with the MSA cargo report (UN number, packaging code, number of packages) before either goes in, so the shared data shows no gap.

  3. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Holyhead decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  4. Import country

Annual battery returns through the NPWD

Every year UK battery producers, registered with the environmental regulator via the National Packaging Waste Database, report the tonnage and chemistry of what they placed on the market. Distributors and retailers that supply more than 32 kg of batteries a year must also offer free take-back of waste portable batteries.

What Anxin does: We give the UK importer the battery weight and chemistry for each shipment from our booking data, which it can use for its annual return; the registration itself stays with the producer.

  5. Import country

Bin symbol and capacity label under the 2008 regulations

For the British market the marking reference is the 2008 placing-on-the-market regulations: every battery carries the crossed-out bin, sized to its surface area, and rechargeable portable batteries state their capacity on the cell or pack and on the packaging front. Small or embedded batteries move the symbol to the packaging.

What Anxin does: We compare carton and battery photos with the UK marking list before goods leave Shenzhen, because relabelling after discharge at Holyhead means opening dangerous goods packages.

  6. Import country

Road haulage from Holyhead under the carriage regulations

The road leg out of Holyhead is regulated by the Carriage of Dangerous Goods Regulations 2009, which make ADR the rulebook for dangerous goods on British roads, with national derogations. UN 3480 moves as class 9, so the haulier needs the same package and UN details as the ocean declaration.

What Anxin does: We give the UK haulier the UN number, class and package details from the sea dangerous goods declaration so the road paperwork from Holyhead matches what left Shenzhen.

Documents & compliance

Checklist for Shenzhen → Holyhead

Test reports, safety data sheets and import certificates come from the shipper, factory and importer, not from Anxin; our part is to review them before booking.

At the Shenzhen end

  • Confirmation from the carrier of the DG cut-off at Yantian or Shekou, rechecked in typhoon weeks
  • Transport-condition classification report where applicable
  • Load plan showing even weight distribution (no more than 60% of the cargo weight in either half of the container length)
  • Crossed-out bin symbol and mAh/Ah capacity label checked on battery and packaging photos
  • Substance statement for mercury, cadmium and lead from the manufacturer

Carrier and voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)
  • Bill-of-lading issuer named and S&S GB data complete before loading

For the importer in United Kingdom

  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR
  • BPRN of the UK producer on invoices and delivery notes
  • Battery compliance scheme (or NPWD registration) for portable batteries

Before you book

Match the details first

We line up UN numbers, model names and package counts across the Shenzhen filings, the booking with the carrier and the documents for United Kingdom before the booking is confirmed, so that a mismatch is fixed at origin rather than discovered at Holyhead.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Shenzhen → Holyhead: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

Since September 2026 Dongguan Customs and Dongguan MSA share dangerous-goods packaging certificate data and act jointly against false declarations, so the packaging certificate and the MSA filing should match exactly.
