What to watch between Xiamen and Sesimbra: 5 points

Listed from loading in Xiamen to import into Portugal, each with what we do about it.

  1. Origin port

    The Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon starts at the port

    Ships leaving Xiamen enter the Taiwan Strait straight away. A Chinese government weather account notes that the strait's funnel effect makes winds 1–2 Beaufort levels stronger than outside it, and that the winter and spring north-east monsoon brings force 7 or stronger winds on about two-thirds of days. Container ships are advised to secure lashing.

    What Anxin does: From October to April we apply the CINS blocking and bracing checks strictly on stuffing photos before sealing.

  2. Sea corridor

    Suez is the likelier routing for Sesimbra

    Asia–Mediterranean services used the Red Sea 57% of the time in September 2026 according to Sea-Intelligence, compared with 27% for North Europe, so a box for Sesimbra most probably goes via Suez and through Bab el-Mandeb. The JMIC rated that strait SUBSTANTIAL on 24 September 2026; the Houthis call their blockade selective and now hold Perim Island in the channel.

    What Anxin does: We ask the carrier which routing its service to Sesimbra uses and name it on the quote, together with any war-risk or emergency surcharge.

  3. Import country

    SILiAmb registration with APA and a licensed entity

    Anyone placing batteries on the Portuguese market, importers included, registers with the Portuguese Environment Agency on SILiAmb and files an annual declaration by 31 March, counting batteries built into other products. Responsibility is met through a licensed management entity such as Electrão, or an individual system authorised by APA.

    What Anxin does: We ask the Portuguese importer for its APA registration and management entity before booking, and list battery weights separately so its declaration is easy.

  4. Import country

    Battery label from August 2026, QR code from February 2027

    Two marking dates fall into current shipping plans for Portugal: the general label from 18 August 2026 and the QR code from 18 February 2027, which for EV, LMT and larger industrial batteries has to open the battery passport.

    What Anxin does: Before booking we ask the Portugal importer to confirm the battery category and whether the label and QR-code elements are already on the goods, and compare carton photos with that answer.

  5. Import country

    The truck leg out of Sesimbra runs under ADR

    Once the container leaves the terminal by road, ADR applies: Directive 2008/68/EC makes EU countries use it for domestic dangerous goods journeys as well as international ones. UN 3480 is class 9, transport category 2, with tunnel restriction code (E), so the haulier in Portugal has to plan around category E tunnels, and damaged or defective batteries fall under special provision 376 and packing instructions P908 or P911 instead of P903.

    What Anxin does: We give the Portugal haulier the same UN number, class and package details that appear on the sea dangerous goods declaration, so the ADR transport document matches the container paperwork from Xiamen.
