Lithium batteries for Stranraer go from Fujian's battery makers through Xiamen port. On the way they face a voyage that may run through Suez as drawn or round the Cape, depending on the service, and they arrive at the port of Stranraer.

On the UK side, customs runs through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service and producers report battery tonnage through the NPWD. This page sets out 5 points specific to this route, how Anxin handles each one and which documents to prepare.

Route profile

The Xiamen → Stranraer route in brief

Origin port

Xiamen (Haicang / Songyu)

Fujian's battery gateway, handling more than 90% of the province's lithium battery exports, with 10-minute online packaging appraisal for compliant products and the Taiwan Strait's winter monsoon on the doorstep.

Sea corridor

Asia – North & Atlantic Europe

The map shows the Suez corridor, but in September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sails round the Cape of Good Hope.

Where this route gets difficult

5 pain points from Xiamen to Stranraer

Loading port first, then the sea leg, then Stranraer and the United Kingdom market.

  1. Origin port

Xiamen's 10-minute packaging appraisal only works for clean data

Xiamen Customs now issues the packaging use-appraisal certificate for lithium batteries through the single window after automatic pre-review matching: about 10 minutes in the case reported in August 2026, against roughly half a day for the old on-site inspection. The fast path is only for products that pass pre-review as compliant and valid; anything that does not match goes back to inspection.

What Anxin does: We check the product data, UN38.3 summary and packaging codes against the application before it is submitted, so the certificate comes through pre-review rather than falling back to an on-site check.

  2. Sea corridor

Suez on the map, the Cape on most sailings

The corridor on this page is drawn through Bab-el-Mandeb and the Suez Canal. In practice, Sea-Intelligence data for September 2026 put Red Sea routing on the Asia–Europe head-haul at 13–25%: 27% for services to North Europe and 57% for Mediterranean services. Which service calls at Stranraer decides whether the box goes through Suez or round the Cape of Good Hope, and the two routings differ in length, in the waters crossed and in the ports where a box might be transhipped.

What Anxin does: We ask the carrier to state the routing and any transhipment port on the booking confirmation, and we quote the two routings separately when both are on offer rather than mixing them.

  3. Import country

Batteries in appliances must be readily removable

UK rules require appliances with built-in batteries to be designed so that the end user can readily remove the battery, or, where that is not possible, an independent qualified professional can, with instructions naming the battery type. The design question sits with the manufacturer, long before the goods reach Stranraer.

What Anxin does: When appliances with built-in batteries are booked for the UK we remind the importer of the removability rule so the manufacturer can answer it before shipment; we do not assess compliance.

  4. Import country

An S&S GB entry summary 24 hours before loading in Xiamen

Great Britain has its own security pre-filing: for deep-sea containers the entry summary declaration goes to the S&S GB service at least 24 hours before loading at the departure port. The party that issued the bill of lading is legally responsible, and a booking made inside the 24 hours has to go on a later vessel.

What Anxin does: We settle who issues the bill of lading at booking and pass complete consignee and goods data to that party before the Xiamen cut-off.

  5. Import country

Mercury, cadmium and lead under UK rules

Batteries sold in the UK may contain no more than 0.0005 % mercury and 0.002 % cadmium by weight, subject to listed exceptions, and those above 0.004 % lead need the Pb symbol beneath the bin symbol. The Office for Product Safety and Standards enforces the rules.

What Anxin does: We ask the manufacturer for a substance statement covering mercury, cadmium and lead and file it with the shipment documents for the UK importer; we do not test batteries.

Documents & compliance

What to have ready: Xiamen to Stranraer

Anxin reviews documents supplied by the shipper, manufacturer and importer; it does not issue test reports, safety data sheets or import certificates.

At the Xiamen end

  • Packaging appraisal data (product, UN38.3 summary, packaging codes) checked before single-window submission
  • Crossed-out bin symbol and mAh/Ah capacity label checked on battery and packaging photos
  • Substance statement for mercury, cadmium and lead from the manufacturer
  • Safety data sheet and dangerous goods safe-carriage declaration for the MSA cargo report
  • Customs packaging use-appraisal result for the dangerous goods packaging (with the maker's performance appraisal)

For the carrier and the voyage

  • Routing (Suez or Cape of Good Hope) and any transhipment port stated on the booking confirmation
  • Condition statement: new, used, damaged/defective (SP376) or for recycling (SP377)
  • Bill-of-lading issuer named and S&S GB data complete before loading

At the United Kingdom end

  • UK haulier briefed with UN 3480 class 9 details for road carriage under ADR
  • Battery weight and chemistry per shipment for the importer's NPWD return

Before you book

One consistent file

A document that is present but inconsistent holds a booking as surely as a missing one: the UN number, model name or carton count reads differently in the Xiamen export filings, the carrier booking and the United Kingdom import papers. We compare all three before confirming space.

Carriers we book with

Our booking panel; availability on this lane and acceptance of the declared UN numbers are confirmed for each booking. It does not mean that a listed carrier runs a direct service on this route. Carrier choice depends on the trade lane, cargo classification and each carrier's dangerous-goods acceptance at booking. The final carrier is confirmed on the booking.

Questions

Xiamen → Stranraer: questions we are asked

At least 24 hours' notice to the harbour master before the dangerous goods enter the harbour area, under the Dangerous Goods in Harbour Areas Regulations 2016, unless the harbour master agrees a shorter period.

It depends on the service. In September 2026 most Asia–North Europe capacity still sailed round the Cape of Good Hope; Sea-Intelligence put the Red Sea share for North Europe vessels at 27%. We ask the carrier to confirm the routing on the booking and quote each routing separately.

For products that pass automatic pre-review, Xiamen Customs issues it through the single window; the case reported in August 2026 took about 10 minutes, against about half a day for the old on-site inspection. Products that do not pass pre-review still need inspection.
