Mongolia sits between China and Russia. Its rail operator publishes a list of stations where dangerous goods may be loaded and unloaded, and that list is the first thing to check for a battery shipment.

Ulaanbaatar Railway's freight forwarding centre lists Erdenet, Sharyn gol, Honhor, Amgalan, Bayan, Baganuur, Shivee-ovoo, Ayrag, Bor-Ondor, Saynshand and Orgon; Ulaanbaatar and Zamyn-Üüd are not on the list.2

A broad-gauge train, a short list of stations
In May 2022 a broad-gauge container train named "Erenhot No. 1" left Erenhot for Ulaanbaatar with 54 containers without transshipment at the border.3 China's own rail guidance adds a rule at the origin: consumer batteries above 20 Wh per Li-ion cell or 100 Wh per battery are outside the relief for ordinary goods.4
Mongolia is not an ADR contracting party,5 and the railway says dangerous goods are carried according to special regulations.2 Lithium batteries are screened case by case, subject to operator and country acceptance.
